And you can check in to places without being there (which is weird, but true), and you don't check out. So if you looked at my profile right now, you'd think I was at the bar I had happy hour at last night. I don't think anyone trusts FourSquare to accurately tell where anybody is. They use it to launch a text conversation asking if they're still there, etc.

There's a lot of potential - I would say companies and businesses are under-utilizing the platform as it's still basically new. So right now it's more of a status/social thing.

i think there is a lot of under-utilization of using tools in conjunction with one another. what if you company used a foursquare coupon for $ off their next order dovetailed with groupon.

something like that would start transitioning more one-time customers into regulars

Jenn Pedde @KellyLux & I started a book club called the "Syracuse Twiterary Society." Each month we read books about social media and business and such. The first book we picked is Chris Brogan's "Trust Agents." It's been a fantastic read and as a community manager, very helpful - if only to reaffirm my practices. On Tuesday, August 24th, the Twiterary Society will be doing a live chat from 8-9pm EST using the tag #CuseTS. If you've read the book, or are curious about it - PLEASE join us!

Jason Lewis Foursquares ability to claim your venue seems to be a local businesses dream come true. It's free marketing to Gen X and Gen Y with no investment. The possibilities of increasing your local business identity through the use of such a simple tool astounds me (especially for the food service and bar industry). How long till Foursquare Tips are just as important as Yelp reviews to your google places profile? If your a local business why wouldn't you claim your venue and offer a special?

Ryan, I think you really hit on why some people love Foursquare and others have no idea why: location.

Foursquare is favored in big, Midatlantic cities, especially New York (though I'm closer to the Philadelphia area and it's all over here as well as DC. Harvard University has also officially adopted it and created some Harvard/Cambridge specific badges.) Foursquare was brought down to SxSW last year and made it's triumphant return this year, but if you're not the kind of nerd into SXSW, you wouldn't know that (and even if you'd heard, you probably wouldn't care).

Gowalla, by contrast, is practically an official city institution in San Fransisco, from what I understand. Most of the people I know in the SoCal and surrounding area (Vegas, AZ, etc.) favor Gowalla.

So, for me as a Midatlantic girl, everwhere I go there is Foursquare. My friends are on Foursquare. In the small, suburban town where I live, I was just thrown out of mayor office of my local mom and pop bakery today on Foursquare. It's huge here. But, I imagine, once you get away from the major cities in this area, it hasn't spread that far yet.

Ryan Healy What do you guys think, should Foursquare sell now to Yahoo for $100 million + or try to change the world alone with some VC backing? I vote sell now, Mark Rizzn Hopkins agrees http://bit.ly/9tPk1l, but Mike Arrington and Ben Parr say don't do it. If I really believed in Foursquare I would have to agree with Mike and Ben, but I think there is too much competition and too many big players that can win the game if they want to. Plus I'm just not a big fan of the service. I would take the pay day.

Ryan Paugh OK. Let me know if anyone has thought of this yet. I came up with this Foursquare event idea with a couple friends yesterday. Wouldn't it be cool to do a Foursquare scavenger hunt? I imagine setting up teams of people and using Foursquare to guide them to different mystery locations around your city. Whichever team is able to check in at all of the mystery locations before the end of the day wins. I'm imagining kegs at each location, but that's just me! Thoughts?

claire stokoe When i first started using Foursquare, the gaming element actually made me want to go places so that i could become mayor. I then started getting free coffees from a place that i logged into and that made me go there alot more. They actually started to send out tweets, challanging others to oust me from my mayor spot..and that free coffees would be in it for them. I thought that this was a pretty good idea, although i have left the area and so cannot battle for my crown.

As I headed down to the post-panel reception in the lounge, I decided to check in on 4Sq and discovered Pop Burger was just around the corner on 9th and had good reviews and a relatively inexpensive (for NYC) menu, so I popped over there to eat. Actually, I first stopped at Simple Kitchen, which also popped up when I checked in at Comix, even though they were more pricey because they offer a 4Sq discount. Zack Zaban Slightly off topic, but still related to foursquare. Mashable just posted an article about "pleaserobme.com", a site that links into foursquare and allows anyone to see when a user has checked in at a location, thus not occupying their home. Dale Beermann I've been using some of these apps for a while to get a feel for them and the business models associated with them. I'd like to hear what people think about "Foursquare fatigue": http://bit.ly/93jtAt. The problem right now is that there are a bunch of competitors in this space, including MyTown and Gowalla, both of whom are on par with Foursquare. Checking into all of them sucks, so you have to pick one or you burn out even more quickly. Twitter is already there, they have the community.
