The dreaded "F" word: feminist. If you believe in equality and enjoy poking fun at hegemony, come on in! The notion of a feminist has, unfortunately, been defined not by feminists at all. This community will redefine the term while promoting equality and illuminating areas within the work world, home life, and world at large in which oppression is still present. We'll also look back at how far we've come in gaining equality for all.

Shana Ross As a feminist, how do you deal with discrimination when you encounter it? I'm mostly curious about folks' direct experiences with gender discrimination, but maybe you tackle other discrimination differently as an enlightened feminist (you know, baby-killing socialist lesbian witch - thanks Pat R.)

And for what it's worth (zero to the debate, everything to my own conscience) I stood up and noted that as a woman of childbearing age, I'm not looking to my job to figure out when to have kids...but I may very well look to change jobs to one that values work-life balance, and my needs as a talented employee. And yet, they couldn't see past the narrow view of "but we'll be paying someone to not work" It was ugly. Very much changed the way I saw the organization and its leadership.

Virginia Merritt Isn't it scary that people like Pat Robertson and Rush Limbaugh actually defined the terms "Feminism" and "Feminist". Pat defines Feminists as" socialist, anti-family, political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians.” And some people bought into this idea. How do you define feminism and being a feminist?

That is the belief and advocacy of females having the exact same chances, rewards and recognition as men have had for the same accomplishments, without having to be beholden to any societal notion of what a "gender role" is.

I actually take the definition further and see it as a pursuit of equality for all, mainly because most feminist I know write and research into all areas from blood diamonds to sex workers to sweat shops. Basically, if it's oppression, I try to aid those within it either through not supporting the products produced, writing on it, or becoming active in advocacy.

I just find it really funny when people "meet" me online and expect to see a buzzed cut, very muscular, non-bra or makeup wearing woman... and then get me. But I truly believe in redefining terms and taking them back, much as the LGBT community has taken back the term queer. thanks for the comment! :-)
