Edward Antrobus I recently applied for a position at a company 900 miles away from where I live. I'll relocate if I get the job, but otherwise there is no reason for me to ever travel to the area. The last time I relocated, it was with no job or prospects,so I'm pretty new at this. If I were to get to the in-person interview stage of this, generally who pays for travel, the me or the company? This would be for an entry level position.

I would relocate myself, but it's difficult in general to convince employers to hire you if you live outside of the city they are located, even when you do indicate interest in relocating. Complicating matters is when they want to interview you. A lot of us are in the situation of wanting a job somewhere else, but not having the money to risk on interview, only to not get the job. Most companies will not consider a candidate that asks for their interview costs to be covered, making the assumption that if the candidate wanted the job they would be "here."

So far, personally, I've only had one interview where I used Skype. Most companies are hesitant to do that or phone interviews.

It's a rather large company in a rather small job market. I do understand where you are coming from, however. I currently live an hour north of Denver, but as a rule Denver companies don't "look north" for hires.
@Kareem, Best of luck in your endeavors. Chicken & egg problems like that always frustrate me.

Being a communications major with an emphasis in PR, I joined in order to meet like-minded students and enhance my learning experience. PRSSA is a national organization and has national professional chapters as well (PRSA). There were a variety of student organizations on campus that helped students to take their studies and apply them to the working world. We were encouraged to hold internships, attend student and professional networking events, and were aided in the areas I mentioned above. I would suggest joining a student organization to anyone-it really gave us a leg up when breaking into the workforce after college!! Although I did this in college, I think classes or workshops to teach high school students these skills would be a great idea!!

Edward Antrobus At my company, everyone works on-site at client locations. Things are busy this time of year, but come winter, work dries up. I recently found out that, as work dries up, those with more seniority will have the option of poaching my position. There isn't a lot of stratification of talent or ability to get the job done. On one hand, it seems fair. On other hand, I was hired specifically for this project (bit far from other operations, but close to me). Was wondering what everyone's opinion is.

Catherine Adamson I'm 25, working as an office manager for the last 3 years. I've been in my current job for 1 year - lousy pay, great benefits, short hours, safe and boring. I was approached by a former coworker who now leads the software company I used to work for, reorged after a firesale. He asked me to consider being their product manager. Would be a big stretch, a new field where I have no exp, twice the salary, no benefits, and long hours working from home. Should I jump? What questions should I ask?
