Megan Atkinson Web-based start ups like LinkedIn (holy IPO!) and Groupon are dominating the VC world right now leaving clean tech start-ups desperate to keep their heads above water. http://wp.me/p1kAA3-7I Is it just me or are there others that are kind of perplexed at so much money flying at coupons, social networking, etc while our energy infrastructure is suffering immensely? Do you feel this priority paradox is strictly financial or indicative of our society's innate ability to ignore important change?

Meanwhile, Groupon has been consistently pulling in close to $100m/month, and LinkedIn has 100m users. VC's want a return, and currently 'Green Tech' is either too cute (as Bill Gates has said), or is too expensive to fund.

Laura Just joining Brazen Careerist and saw this group. I work at a California utility on energy efficiency regulatory matters. Anyone else here in that field?

Laura:

I was employed for the last 13 years with Alliant Energy – an Iowa/Minnesota/Wisconsin investor-owned utility. I was in the account management section. One of my responsibilities was to educate their large commercial and industrial customers about the Alliant energy efficiency program and help them take advantage of them. I also performed lots of energy audits. My partner and I left Alliant last summer and formed our own energy management/energy management services company – still working with many of the same customers.

I would like to visit with you about the programs that your utility have developed. I am also interested in finding out which utility companies are poised to offer incentives for companies that will be implementing the new ISO 50001 energy management standard.

Looking forward to visiting with you.

Megan Atkinson People ask me a lot why I chose to get into the energy industry. I blame my dad here: http://wp.me/p1kAA3-49. What do I love more than blaming my dad for my career? Hearing about why *others* do what they do. Why did you choose your career? What led you to where you are now and what will lead you to the next jumping off point? I'd love to hear your story.

Regina Richardson: LOL -- yep, I, too, "blame" my Dad for my career choices. And I lay the "blame" for most of my natural skills at the feet of both parents.

@Jason, I'm glad to hear it all worked out for the best! Big decisions like that can be tough to stomach when you're in the meat of everything. Thanks for sharing!
@Regina, awesome! I've no idea where my natural skills and talents came from as I'm almost nothing like my parents in those regards but I'm glad I learned from their guidance. :)

Megan Atkinson Only 27% of the energy workforce is comprised of women. Schneider Electric, global industry leader in energy management solutions, is determined to change that. http://wp.me/p1kAA3-1J Read about how one company is striving to tip the gender scales a bit in a male dominated industry.

Megan Atkinson In the movie National Lampoon's Van Wilder, Gwen (Van's love interest) states: "Well I think it takes a lot more then the kind of underwear one wears to define them as a person." I think the same can be said about energy efficiency. Read about what kind of undies Energy Efficiency wears: http://bit.ly/eN3xGl Feedback is always welcome.

I totally agree with your conclusions. I would also add that saving energy and energy efficiency is a matter of national security for this country. As long as we have service men and women overseas in oil producing nations and our eyes on the Suez Canal, we should be more energy efficient than ever.

I complete agree with your assessment of efficiency being tied to national security concerns. I plan on doing a post specifically about said concerns eventually. Thanks for reading!

Doug Litwiller, PE, CEM I was employed as a project manager at a large utility company within the account management department. I worked directly with our large industrial customers helping them become more energy efficient. I subsequently founded an energy management consulting company. Energy use and energy efficiency normally takes a "back seat" to production-related issues. American industry needs to raise the level of importance of energy management to that of safety management!
