Reneida Hello Everybody, I am an MBA student at University of Maryland completing an independent research study course on new product marketing. Part of the study requires me to get at least 150 parents of young children to answer the following short (16-question) survey on interactive educational games for young children: http://alexandra.bmgt.umd.edu/SSI/ Please take 10 minutes to fill it out and pass the link to other parents that you know. I will be infinitely grateful! Thanks in advance Reneida

Eleni Miltsakaki Choosito! seach and learn is inviting beta testers. Go to www.choosito.com to sign up for free. It's search technology for schools. Students can browse the web safely and filter results by school grade and thematic area (science, language & arts) etc. Teachers can build their own libraries adding sites and they can browse or add webquests to the questbook.

I'm not necessarily interested in the proprietary technology, not more on how it differentiates between good and bad. In high school, the joke was that NJ only had 19 counties because Essex and Sussex didn't make it through the web filters.

Web doesn't differentiate good from bad. It uses natural language technology to analyse text and classify its reading difficulty and thematic content. Sites are ratable by users and this information down the road will teach Choosito! what sites are most valued by educators. For now, Choosito! Library and Teachers' Library allows search to sites approved by teachers or issued by official educational content providers such national geographic, nasa, etc.

Bennett Phillips Three-part question: What do you think of the credibility of online education? Would you hire someone with a degree from an online college if you were in a position to do so? Which online institutions have the best reputation?

Rishona Campbell: To be fair, the University of Phoenix does have actual "campus"; so they cannot be considered an "online only" school.

I think online degrees compared to degrees from the worst "real" schools are the same. But few no online degree can compare to a Harvard degree, unless it's an online degree from Harvard (which they do offer. not exactly 100% online, but mostly.)

Unfortunately, the online degree with the best "reputation" for being an online degree probably also carries with it the most stigma that it is in fact an online degree. So, I would probably urge you to consider online education program from a traditional school. It will give you the benefit of listing that school on your resume, and may avoid that question entirely.

there's a discussion going on over in the web 2.0 network about what web 3.0 will look like. I think there is huge potential for e-learning to continue to expand its application as the web moves from 2.0 to 3.0. Some are saying the promises made about 2.0 may be realised in this newer iteration. Do you have any ideas about what you think the future could look like for e-learning? What do you think will drive online learning? technology? learning needs? individual consumers?

Alex Medvedovski How to increase number of repeated users into our site? Our company, Supercool School, attracted a lot of people to our site. Many users opened on-line schools and use our system very effectively. However, there is a group of people who opened trial schools, tried it several times and never came back. What would be the best way to find out why they didn't come back and ideally make them return and start using the system?

They clearly had an interest in your site, visited it many times, and would probably want to help you succeed. I create all of my survey's on www.surveymonkey.com & they have a great free account, but people are tired of surveys so I would be surprised if you get the results you want.

So, the way it works is that every accredited school (2 types of accreditation: national / regional)...has to undergo a series of "inquisitions" and "visits" from the accrediting bodies (whether that be SACS, NHALC, etc - it's based on region). Before an online school 'becomes' accredited, this goes on - and then a follow up visit every 6 months. LMS's (learning management systems) are the largest part of the process. So, with companies like Blackboard and eCollege, one of the super smart things they did when they entered the market years ago (before they owned 95% of the market place) was they requested that someone from the accrediting body be on their 'board of advisors'. This was 1) for political purposes 2) So that this individual could advise them as to how to get the whole platform evaluated and "passed" before hand. So, when the accrediting body goes into a school and a school is using Blackboard or ecollege, the school doesn't have to go through ANY evaluation or assessment on the LMS tool.

Anyways, I may be getting a head of myself here; but because I was an executive in this industry for the last 8 years and I really think what you've done is great; I want to ensure you know some of the "secrets" of how the online higher education industry became SO BIG so quickly.

That said, I realized I don't even know your purpose or objective of this tool ( ; so I may be sticking my nose where it doesn't belong and I apologize! Just trying to help.

Sidenote: MS WORD is a 'tool' teachers may use to assess student's work. The LMS is an actual 'learning platform'. 2 different things.

I'm taking the online option for classes from UCLA Extension toward a certificate. I really like it. You definitely have to manage your time and studying more, but I also enjoy having more freedom. But I guess UCLA Extension sort of falls in the middle for your question since it still has the name "UCLA" to stand behind. Also, even tho my class can get college credit, it doesn't use the same book as the equivalent regular UCLA class. Hrm...

Our online courses are usually just another section of the traditional lecture course (except for the College of Liberal Studies) but keeping the textbooks updated is always challenging (like vanessa said, they often will be a different text or an older edition).
I don't think that illegitimacy, necessarily, is as much of a concern for university leaders as much as competition. Maybe another question might be... when will the educational bubble burst?

Mariusz Hi. Anyone from UK/Scotland here ? I'm trying to kick-start an educational, widely-understood design usergroup in Edinburgh. Anyone willing to come/present/participate/socialise or just exchange knowledge in any way ? No money to me made (yet) but eternal glory and straight path to nirvana assured :)
