Congratulations for a well-written paper. Is this perspective part of a thesis? There were a number of points I agreed with but also a number of points where I strongly disagree. That education is in dire need of reform is unmistakeable. In the Ontario elementary system there is one academic system only and anyone who falls well below that is placed onto an IEP or Individual Education Plan. Since I worked in the Special Education office for 2 years I can tell you exactly how we design an individual plan: if a child is in grade 3 we simply take the requirements from the gr 2 curriculumm he or she was unable to master the year before and this becomes the gr 3 curriculum and evaluation criteria. That doesn't cut it to me. By high school however there is a two-tiered system whereby children can enroll in both academic and applied levels of learning, the applied being for children who would normally be placed on IEPs. There are still IEPs however in high school so I can only assume that there are children who struggle with the applied level as well.
We had what I feel is a disturbing development in Toronto (my home city). A black school for black students only was opened three years ago and I felt that was a mistake. The community felt it was needed since minorities are so overlooked in the Ontario curriculum and I have to agree with that much. But anything that separates one race from another smacks of segregation to me and that's just treading on thin ice. What we need is curriculum reform on so many levels.
Having said all that (man can I talk) I don't think the entire education system "lacks total knowledge." For one thing schools do not applaud those who work the hardest necessarily. They commend those who who are the smartest (consider Honour Rolls for students with straight A's). That leaves out a sizeable student population who are trying their hardest for commendations.
Evaluation and grading is measured very differently in elementary school than just tests. There are individual and group projects, participation, attitude, attendance, and observation of whether or not a student is using learned methods to achieve an answer, be it right or wrong. The answer itself may be marked as wrong but the means to get there still gets points.
In Ontario high school there is a grade 10 literacy test which is standard. Everyone who takes it has to pass or they cannot proceed to grade 11.
That was a great review! I enjoyed it!

Hey folks,
Just looking for others thinking about going PHD or who are . I just finished my M.A. and taught on the college level for two years.
I love (and miss) teaching, I love (and miss) my research, but I have no desire for the Publish, Publish, Publish life. Any insight or advice would be excellent. My research method is rhetorical criticism in Communication Studies and I'm also a social media and marketing professional, if that helps any feedback.

Hi there Virginia,
I'm sort of in a similar boat here--I have my MA in quantitative research, my main interests being education research though. Currently I work for professors at a school of public health doing quant research/data analysis. I've done my fair share of talking to people inside and outside of academia about getting my doctorate. From what I have gathered, some of Gary's points above are correct. It is getting more difficult to get a tenured job, however it also depends on the field you want to go into and where you want to work.

Have you heard of the trickle down effect with PhD's? Basically if you want to work at a big research university that is quite prestigious in your field, you really need to get a degree from a very highly rated grad program. If you don't mind working for a medium to low ranked school (maybe you are more interested in teaching and working with undergrads as opposed to being more research focused and working with grad students) then it doesn't matter as much where you go.

Also, you say you don't want the pressure to research (I understand that completely since I work at a highly rated research university and the profs here are all under pressure to research and get grants!) so it sounds like you might be looking for a small liberal arts undergrad college or something. I would try to talk to professors who work at such a university--and preferably professors who are young. Older professors won't really know what the job market is like nowadays. Also, might be good to talk to current doctoral students--that helped me a lot!

Oh and also spend a good deal of time reading some scholarly articles written by folks who teach at the programs you might want to go to--you should really familiarize yourself with specific departments that specialize in your field before you even apply. It helps in the application process if you can say who you might be interested in working with. And one last thing! It does depend on your field, but I know for education research organizations in the non-profit and government sector, there is a very big need for PhD researchers. In fact, at those organizations, you can't even move up the ladder without one. So I might be planning on going down that road and then I can teach on the side if I want to.

If you know exactly the position you want after getting the degree, a PhD could be for you, the key is just having a vision of what that job is before you get started.

Good luck!!

Most of everything you both brought up are the exact reasons/obstacles keeping me away from really finishing my applications. I have friends who LOVE their programs and I have Friends who have dropped out of their programs due to many of the reasons you both listed. It's a hard choice to make and frankly, I'm not really sure if I am ready.

My MA was from a top notch terminal masters program that was run like a mini PHD. 30+ page research papers for each course, publications, conference presentations, teaching... I feel the program really prepared me for the issues/obstacles that are out there, but my research method is one that those who do SPSS don't "respect" even though our fore-scholars include Burke, Bormann, and Campbell. It's harder to publish in Comm journals as a rhetorical critic and harder to find jobs because there are typically only 2-4 on a department. But I LOVE my research method and feel even if I don't follow through with PHD, it's a method that will be profitable to me as I still perform my research, find it very valuable when it comes to my own startup PR/Marketing/Communication company and can't wait to utilize it within the blogs I'll be doing. I just love showing how companies, political campaigns, and etc utilize communication to persuade, create critical masses. I also love showing how these forms of communication illustrate the master narratives within our society along with the counter-narratives out there. I feel this understanding of how communication works really separates me in the business world. And I can always go back to school (and part of me feels going back for the PHD now is "giving up" or "taking the easy way out".)thanks again!

I am using his book as a discussion board with my children. I know that they are only in 4th grade, but I learn from listenting to them. Their thoughts on issues especially concerning school matters and other children near their age opens the door for wonderful discussions. This is a good book for that. I have not finished reading Rafe's book yet.

I'm looking forward to joining. I teach 4th grade in Texas. That means TAKS and TEKS and testing, testing, testing. I'm always looking for new way to teach and reach children. All the new technology is wonderful, but our school doesn't have the Title 1 make-up to afford purchasing the needed equipment. I'm also getting ready to take the GRE for graduate school any helpful information would be appreciated.

NBC certainly wasn't easy, and it's time-consuming, but as long as you pass in one try, it finishes in one year.

Have you read any of Rafe Esquith's books? I highly recommend them. They're short and easy to read and amazing.

If you can somehow integrate more more more social web, simple video chat, and still differentiate yourself from the big guys--you have a fighting chance. Gotta stay ahead of the curve, you know? Do you plan on marketing to higher ed institutions or students directly if I might ask?

But, along those lines, if I were going to point to a significant difference, I would say training creates habitual skills while education creates the ability to learn.

Increasing students performance is very important but if we focus only on this then we lose sight of why we choose to be educators. We always want our kids to do there best but if performance is the key to a teacher's pay then it becomes nothing more than a sales job. We need to take all the variables into consideration in order to actually promote some kind of performance based incentive.
