Geanine Thompson Hi Everyone, I'm NYC but planning on moving to Durham in the next six months or so. I wanted to connect here so I could get to know people before I get there. I'm not a total stranger to the area. I lived here during my grad school years at Duke.

Carlee Mallard A fellow BC & I are planning a local Gen Y/young careerist meetup. We're thinking college students/graduates/motivated young people to help each other take the "next step" in their career, find mentors in the area, have expert speakers in navigating post-college life & careers, & some small-group "epiphany farming" sessions. Anyone else started a similar meetup? What's the focus/activities & have any tips? If not, what kind of life & career meetup activities would be useful & intrigue you?

Wish I was still down in Bull City. Could I make the suggestion that you consider hosting it along with/at Bull City Forward? Also, I would encourage you to work with Latoya Williams (she's a Brazen Member). She's an accomplished career coach who is passionate about helping young professionals find their passions. Find her on Brazen, or at her website: www.firstgenerationprofessional.com.

Keep us updated, and let me know if I can do anything to help.

I actually DO know Latoya (I've met her & been in touch about some other local events) and all that she could bring to the table. I was hoping that she would be interested in helping or providing some guidance for the group in general.

Bull City Forward is definitely making a footprint in Durham, so it would be interesting to share what they can offer with the group... well, once we know what this group is going to offer.

Karl Sakas If you're interested in marketing, technology, or product management and you're in the N.C. Research Triangle, come to ProductCamp RTP on May 22. This free "unconference" features presentations on a variety of topics. Plus, several of the sponsors are looking to hire people, so if you're looking for a job in these areas, it might be an especially good opportunity. To sign up (or submit a presentation proposal), visit the website: http://barcamp.org/ProductCampRTP

Thomas Ransom: Big fan of the Pecha Kucha format. Would be interested is hearing your take on what makes it marketably-different from TED.

Actually a few months ago I drew a venn diagram of the three major idea-sharing events (PechaKucha, TEDx, & Ignite) comparing/contrasting them and everyone seemed to get a kick out of it (http://www.carleemallard.com/2010/02/its-a-free-market-for-spreading-ideas/). The venn diagram could definitely use an update though after actually ATTENDING all 3 of those events. TEDxTriangleNC was vastly different from the PechaKucha events that I organize. TEDx was a much more highly organized event (more like a conference) lasting all day from 10am-6pm. There was a schedule of speakers with their bios printed out, T-shirts for sale, high-end sponsors like Whole Foods to cater a free lunch, professional photography and video, etc. TEDx also requires organizers to show a certain number of TED videos during the event to break up the local speakers. The speakers at TEDx in general are also much more intellectual and sometimes slightly more high-profile (the TEDx organizers cold-call people to get them to speak at the event).

PechaKucha on the other hand is almost nothing like TEDx in those ways. It's incredibly laid-back, low-cost, usually taking place at a local bar/restaurant/office and has a strict format (20x20 slides, 10-12 speakers) keeping it at a max of 2 hours.

Anyways, if you want to know more, get in touch!
