Rebecca Thorman I want to learn PHP, AJAX and how to build a CMS. How do I go about it? While I am familiar with code from my blog, I would like links to straight-up beginner resources. How do I set up a coding environment on my computer? What are the best tutorials and resources or even classes available on the web? Thanks in advance...

I am using XAMPP as well, but only because the group recommended it and it ended up being easier than what the book suggested. I think the book is great and is very easy and clear - plus, there are lots of great online resources that align with each chapter. For me, I like being able to mark up the book as well. Hope that helps! After the Head First book, I also have a book called PHP and MySql for Web Devlelopment which is part of the Web Developers series. It looks pretty good, but certainly more advanced than the Head First book I'm doing now.

Rebecca,

I know I'm digging up an old thread here, but how has the experience of learning PHP & MySQL been treating you?

Once you've gotten some experience with the basics, I'd recommend using that experience in a true LAMP stack.

There are 2 easy (easier...) ways to move in that direction:
- virtualize a LAMP server locally (using VirtualBox, Parallels, etc.), or
- set up a virtualized server through RackSpace, AWS, or similar.

If you're planning to stick with it, it is important to break away from the Windows-based stack. Linux-based stacks tend to be more performant and robust, and don't suffer with the issues inherent in the Windows-targeted implementation of PHP. It is very likely that any professional opportunities that you'll encounter will require LAMP experience over X/WAMP experience.

Hi Steve.
I can't say that I've ever had Drupal-based issues w/ hosting companies. Even when Fantastico was available, I always installed and maintained my Drupal sites manually, so I can't think of anything Drupal-related that my hosting company could have offered that would have helped me. Maybe training? Test sites? Resources?

Instead I've had general issues, such as: awkward front-ends to get to various services (cPanel, for example, which I think is OK at best, although there are worse ones...); one hosting company didn't offer mySQL access so I couldn't get to my database; and another had an extremely awkward series of hurdles I had to jump over to get any help when things weren't working...

So for me it'd be accessibility to my entire server and features, overall ease-of-use, and customer service/tech support. Add some green technology or credits and that'd be cool.

Hope that helps.

While it's focused on overriding the simplenews subscription block via hook_form_alter and a custom module, there's a lot of basic info about module development. Hope this helps. Also, attended my first Drupal Camp, DCTO 2010 and it was awesome. I HIGHLY suggest attending these if you have the opportunity near you. peter yaworski okay all, another question for module developers - how did you learn to develop drupal modules? beyond things learning materials (e.g. videos, books). In other words, it's one thing to read/learn about module development, another to actually do it. Did you offer to co-maintain an existing module? Did you dream up a module (if so, how? did you find an idea in a forum or just personal need?)? I'd like to get started but feel like everything's being done / is way too complicated for a beginner.

@jenna, contributing patches is a great call, i really hadn't thought about that, i kept thinking big pie in the sky ideas but that seems like a great way to make incremental steps as i don't have to build the module from scratch... thanks!

peter yaworski Hi all, question for the networks - how does everyone price themselves, it is based on a project fee, hourly rate, etc.? What about projects that are indefinite? Do you work on a retainer and if so, how have you sold that to the client in the past?

My payment terms range from hourly rate, daily rate and retainer based. To ensure that I am not overworked with the daily rate - it caps out after 7 hours and then I flip to the higher hourly rate (I offer a 40% reduction in price on the daily rate). I really like the bundled approach Kate proposed.
@Kate I'm wondering how you determine your bundled rate - is it a percentage off the hourly rate or does it also depend on the number of hours purchased? If you don't work all of the hours does the client get a refund? Thanks in advance.

For example, for purchasing 100 hours up front, they get 3% off the hourly rate. For 200 hours, it's 6% off, etc.

Of course, this only makes sense for clients who know they will have either a very big project with an undefined scope or lots of smaller projects. Generally, we put a time limit on the hours and, if they don't use them, they lose them.

So, for example, if the client knows they have 3 projects coming along that will total somewhere around 250 hours, they can buy a bundle of 200 hours at the discounted rate and then either buy another bundle when the first bucket runs out or pay the regular hourly rate for the rest.

dreamweaver is essentially a high end text editor and 110% different from drupal - its not even apples to oranges, its apples to gold plated underwear (the underwear being drupal). Tom is bang on when he says wordpress is a waterdown version of drupal.

A quick search for "MySQL #1227" suggests it may be related, for example, to a phpMyAdmin setting (not using localhost, blocked IP etc).
In general using the mysql prompt over SSH is more stable than phpMyAdmin - you need some command line skills (and a hosting provider that offers SSH access).
I've also experienced that the Backup & Migrate module may perform better than PMA - it succeeded at importing a large database where PMA failed every time.

Arjan How do you convince an anti-opensource PHP programmer of the value of an opensource platform like Drupal? I myself am more of a front-end Drupal developer (basic PHP knowledge). I'm well aware of the many advantages such as secure, tested code, APIs, and of course the many readily available features of core and contrib modules. But how could I best steer the discussion in the right direction with someone who knows a lot more about coding? Your thoughts as well as links to blog posts are welcome!

I found that Drupal's hooking infrastructure was too cumbersome for increasingly elaborate web app needs (that fall outside of the Drupal idiom).

RecoveryZone.com is a patient-therapist web app with some complex needs, but I don't think it's publicly viewable yet for evaluation. Lockerz.com was build on D6 for the longest time, though the were getting killed by the load times once they crossed 250,000 members, even with 40 or 50 servers.

The real things you can bid Drupal upon are security, standards, CMS. The learning curve for coding Drupal idiomatically is said to be rather more like a cliff. I would look closely at whether it's better to use Drupal or RoR.
