Hi. Anyone from UK/Scotland here ? I'm trying to kick-start an educational, widely-understood design usergroup in Edinburgh. Anyone willing to come/present/participate/socialise or just exchange knowledge in any way ? No money to me made (yet) but eternal glory and straight path to nirvana assured :)
If you're looking specifically for drupal folks, check out http://groups.drupal.org/drupal-scotland or http://groups.drupal.org/drupalcampuk
I've recently started working with Drupal (previously TextPattern) and I msut say - love it. I'm just wondering if Drupal has got the same range of functionality (through modules) as Joomla...
Marluz,
I left Joomla in 2007. I had a HUGE social network site I was building for a large Venture Capitalist. I pitched Joomla to the VC and I was assembling a team of coders to build out this crazy project when some 1 responded to 1 of my ads for Joomla Customization. It was a Drupal shop that offered to build a Drupal prototype of the site for free. They did it in amazing time so we switched development to Drupal mid project & launched on time.
Now Drupal is all I do. Its highly versatile.
I don't have too much experience with Joomla, but from what I understand, they are very similar in the types of modules they offer. What I can say about Drupal is that the modules are coded very well, are reliable, secure, and can be built upon. I have been told that Joomla doesn't have as much of a learning curve and is better for designers, but not great for developers.
Photis is absolutely right. While the learning curve is softer on Joomla, it simply isn't the robust framework that you need for cutting edge applications. who loves Drupal? Publishers do. Check out http://drupal.org/books for the GROWING list of books. Universities, governments, libraries, etc. If you want some high quality videos [DVD or DownLoad] check out the Lullabot store at http://is.gd/4LYSi The Drupal community teaches its own in local groups, books, videos, online chat, events, etc.
Curious about how large a tech staff is required for an enterprise like brazen (understanding that every socnet undertaking will be different), and if you sometimes encounter performance bottlenecks due to growth or spikes in online activity.
I'm sorry I didn't respond to this sooner. We currently have three tech guys including me. But, almost all we work on is new development + bug fixes. So, much of how big your team is depends on where you're trying to go and the number of issues logged, not the size of the site.
Most of our hardware & OS needs are handled by our host, and if you've set up your Drupal application layer correctly most spikes shouldn't affect you. Drupal already has configurable tools to handle scaling required for 90% of sites out there. We have to do custom work, mostly because of the other customizations we've done, but still use standard tools.
Site growth and higher sustained utilization present other development challenges, but you'll have to be specific about your concerns.
Anyone here going to DrupalCamp Chicago (http://drupalcampchicago.org/)?
I'll be there! The Hotel Orrington is a beautiful place. I was just there in April presenting at the www.CMSexpo.net.
Be thinking what you want to do on the Sunday UN-CONFERENCE sessions. Anything goes.
I'm on the planning committee for this years camp. Let me know if you have suggestions or questions regarding the website or the event in general. WE'RE STILL ACCEPTING SPONSORS. :-)
See you there!
I saw this article: http://bit.ly/4h5pn2 with example of a spec. We work similarly on a Wiki but I'd like to see alternate ways of doing it.
What hosting horsepower does a drupal site like Brazen require? Single, dedicated server? On-demand, scalable cloud hosting? ..just curious.
Currently we're using dedicated servers, four to be precise. We're definitely not at full capacity with them and should be good for a while.
Just for dev purposes though. Also, Drupal out-of-the-box is a memory & processor hog. Take that into account if you're planning on scaling.
Four servers - interesting. For a particular reason, or did you have 4 already and it was easier to team them up rather than buy 1 big one?
First, they have different purposes. One is database, files, and caching. Three are web-servers (due to the high memory usage).
Hi Everyone. Our little Design Afternoon is going ahead in Edinburgh. A presentation on accessibility, video visuals and a brave project is taking place on 30.01.10. Plus some great organic, handmade snacks, so if you're around, just pop in to Forest Cafe - it's free. For more details check www.oscc.web-sandwich.co.uk.
