Brad Hilderbrand Howdy Central Floridians! My wife and I just moved into the area (I'm a PR/Marketing manager for Sourcebits: http://www.sourcebits.com/, she's a librarian at FL Southern) and so far we love it! I can't wait to get involved with the local BC community. I'm mainly a lurker, but I'll try and chip in from time to time and contribute. It's great to be here. :)

Ann Ellingham Crutchfield: Is your wife at the Lakeland campus of FL Southern? We just toured that amazing campus (the Frank Lloyd Wright buildings).

She took me around over the weekend to show me all the Frank Lloyd Wright architecture and it is indeed impressive. I only wish I could have gone into the chapel where the sunlight throws all the stained glass window colors around the room. She assures me it's super-cool. :)

The covered walkway around the campus kind of messed with my head. I know it was tall enough to walk under but I kept finding myself subconsciously ducking my head because I was worried about banging into it! I'm sure there's some sort of elaborate architectural theories at play here, but I don't know what they are. :)

Tatiana Christian Hi! I just moved to Orlando about a month ago and I really like it here. Definitely looking to get more involved with media and entertainment, but it seems that Disney is the only real opportunity around here to get involved in that kind of stuff. Has anyone else noticed this?

Ryan Paugh How is this strange weather down south affecting your work week? I just emailed a contact of mine in Northern Florida and their offices are closed. Are your offices closed?

Meridith Hall, PMP I am in the early planning stages of a new business. Although I am helping with the start-up of another business, I have not been a part of the intimate details. For those out there who have started a business in the past, what was one of the key things that you did (or didn't do) during the planning process that you would recommend to a new entrepreneur?

I am such a now, now, now person and am trying to be patient with the whole process.
I am moving forward on my business plan and am making good progress, so I will be seeking funding soon. I will try to keep track of all the lessons learned to share with people later.

Half of all small businesses fail; I'm willing to bet that a majority of those failures planned for the best or didn't plan at all.

Make sure there is an exit plan. Yes every founder of every business needs one, they aren't just for e-commerce start-ups!

Meridith Hall, PMP The statup that I am currently helping with has a website of course, but we are also working on a blog that is part of this site. Even though I am a Gen Y, I am still relatively clueless when it comes to the whole blog-world. What are the best ways to get your blog noticed? How do people usually stumble across them? Does anyone have recommended reading to get more knowledgable about blogging in general?

Like it's something genetic in people in that generation that they are just naturally born with social media skills.

That observation aside, getting yourself connected to other blogs is a great way to get exposure. It's always hard to get those first couple connections though.

Other than that... as our CEO says "Content, content, content." Writing relevant content that people find relevant and USEFUL is a great way to develop a following. Some bloggers feel that they just need to put words to keyboard and people will automatically love you. Kind of like thinking that because someone is Gen Y they blog...

Thanks everyone for the info. I will be sure to take a look at some of the sites above.
@Dave - You are right, it isn't a naturally born skill, but so many people expect Gen Y to be so in tuned with things like blogging and Twittering. Personally, I can't stand the whole Twitter thing. I could care less what most people are doing every second of their lives, but the older employees around me expect that this is part of my world.
