Brazen Undergrads

College is one of the most influential times in our lives. Independence and discovery shape every moment as we study as undergraduates across the country. However, we may struggle with figuring our our majors, how to get involved around campus, and developing our personal brands through professional development.

Brazen Undergrads is a network to connect undergraduate students. Share your experiences and feel free to develop relations with other students.

Network Leader: Zack Zaban

Lenyasja Breckenridge Hello my fellow undergrads! I am seeking advice on how to find a job with little experience. I do possess fair customer service skills and phone skills. I am a student at Kaplan University (online) But, I feel this is not enough to land the job that I am looking for. What advice could you give me so that I can move forward?

Dave Ellis I wrote a blog post today that young professionals, and those soon entering the Real World may find useful. It's a perspective on how you aren't expected to know everything in your early career - so don't pretend to. Listen and ask questions. Please let me know what you think... http://bit.ly/o50uts

Along with being "not much of a poetry guy," I find the format very hard to read. I just can't keep my eyes focused on such short lines. But from what I saw, I didn't see any content that was substantively different than any other commencement speech. As long as you don't name names or reveal secrets (others or your own), I don't think you could have gotten too personal or direct.

Cameron Plommer When i graduated from college I wish I knew that anything worth doing will take a long time. In school everything is in quarters or semesters chunks, 3 months at a time then it's over and on to the next thing. Information on tests is only important for a couple weeks. Since graduating I've realized it takes far longer to do anything in the real world. Much more work is involved over a long period of time. Since I'm not used to this I often get frustrated and feel like giving up.

We're hoping what we create can help the people. On the note of things taking longer, one of the things I had to get used to is counting on others to get things done. I did my part and i'm ready to go, but must wait (which usually means follow up) for someone else. I'm usually so ready to move on to the next.

Don't give up though. You might not want to limit yourself to exactly what your degree is in. I know that if I strictly stuck to my major I would be languishing teaching history somewhere. Try to think outside the box as painful as that may be (it certainly is for me).

I think this venue is interesting; in fact my husband and I were discussing how little guidance we got from school (and family), regarding career choices. We are still "finding ourselves" although it is kind of like trying to locate things in an oversized paper bag without a real entry or exit in place.

Sometimes, it may be a case of "Be careful what you pray for, you may get it."

Tyler Durbin I enjoy reading but find it difficult holding myself accountable to read & absorb it! So GenYJourney has created a sister site: http://GenYBookClub.com. GenYBookClub is an online community & monthly twitter chat dedicated to bringing the best GenY books & minds together. We vote on a book, take a month to read it & then have a twitter chat (#GenYBookClub) the 1st Tuesday of each month at 8pm ET. The idea is simple: One book. One month. One chat. Is this something you’d want to be involved in?
