Mehul Kar Build Madison 24 hour Create-a-thon starts this Saturday. Anyone interested?

Mehul Kar The author wrote this book with only one constraint: any and every word can only be used ONCE. And yes this includes prepositions and articles like "it", "is" "and", "the". The book is 200 pages long. Other than being really difficult to read (I imagine), this is a feat worth noticing. But is it a feat worth accomplishing? Maybe beneficial to the writer, but is it beneficial to the rest of the world? http://www.amazon.com/o/asin/0971248567/ws00-20

With negotiating more so than anything else I've done in business. You can read all you want and get techniques; but realistically, it comes down to making your 'deal' appear as a win / win. That's a skill you build - not read about.

Mehul Kar I've been reading a lot of nonfiction "business" books lately. Very interesting stuff. In fiction my all time favorites have to be Shogun (James Clavell), Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead (Ayn Rand)

Have you checked out any of the online material/lectures provided by the Ayn Rand Institute? It's definitely worth a look. There have been two biographies of her to come out in the past 6 months or so that might pique your interest. She lived quite a life.

I always thought I'd look up some resources to find out more about her, but other than reading a foreword in one of those books, I didn't do much. Did they ever come out the with movie that was supposed to come out last year?

Ellen Nordahl Hi Everyone! Just a reminder that this month's meeting is this Tuesday (the 16th) at 6:00. There are some good discussion points in the reading guide included in Guernsey, so it might be helpful to bring your copy of the book! Hope to see you all there!

Nathan Lustig I just picked up the book today too. Also, Aayan Hirsi Ali is speaking tomorrow night at the Union from 730-9. I really wanted to go, but I'm already going to the badger basketball game vs. MSU, but if anyone's interested here's the link: http://host.madison.com/wsj/news/local/education/article_b9d38080-0ed2-1... The UW Muslim student org is going to protest the speech.

Ellen Nordahl Hi everyone! Plan on reading "Gurensey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" for February's book club meeting. http://bit.ly/87cd0U Looking forward to seeing you all on the 16th! Just a side note - I'm planning on reading Midnight's Children as well, so if anyone is feeling ambitious or has some extra time on their hands, I'll be game for talking about both :-)

Ellen Nordahl Any votes for next month's book??

121 weeks ago from Brazen Book Lovers - Madison

Rebecca Thorman: I'd vote for Potato Peel Society or Midnight's Children.

Ellen Nordahl Sorry I wasn't able to make it last night. Thanks again to Kate for taking the lead this month! I've read Devil in the White City - it was interesting, but not one that I raved about. Gurnsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society has my vote, or - Midnight's Children by Salman Rushdie http://bit.ly/5Cihmc Set in India, 2 children born @ midnight on India's independence day are switched in the hospital. The son of a wealthy Muslim family is raised in a Hindu tenement, and vise versa.

Rebecca Thorman Hey guys, glad I made it tonight! Here are 3 choices for next month - what do you think? Any sound good? 1) Devil in the White City - http://bit.ly/6ZhO12 - A historic mystery. Non-fiction based on the Chicago world fair and the set-up of the infamous serial killer, early 1900s. 2) Committed - http://bit.ly/8HfyPt - Elizabeth Gilbert's new book. 3) True Compass - http://bit.ly/8SS2Sr - Edward Kennedy's memoir, this is an easy read (I started earlier this month before Infidel), but quite long.

Ellen Nordahl Let's plan on the third Tuesday of each month, with the exception of March (the 3rd Tuesday falls during SXSW, which I know several people are attending). The dates are: Tuesday, January 19th Tuesday, February 16th Tuesday, March 23rd Tuesday, April 20th Also, the WSJ just posted a news story about an assassination attempt on a Danish comic artist that brings into the present some of the issues discussed in "Infidel." http://bit.ly/5SXY0P

Rebecca Thorman I could make either the 2nd Tues of each month or the 3rd Tues of each month - let's decide though so I can keep it on my calendar. Looking forward to this month!

Ellen Nordahl Merry Christmas, everyone! Just an update on the book for next month - per Nathan's recommendation, we'll be reading "Infidel" by Ayaan Hirsi Ali. Though we'd planned on meeting the second Tuesday of each month, I was wondering how the 3rd Tuesday of each month works with everyone's schedules (that would be January 19th). I'm going to be out of town the 2nd week of January, but if you want to go ahead with the meeting as scheduled, I'll jump back in in February. Hope to see more of you there!

Ellen Nordahl The meeting for tonight is postponed because of the weather. As good as "The Help" is, it doesn't quite merit risking life and limb. Let's plan on rescheduling for early next week - Monday or Tuesday. I'd really like for everyone who took the time to read the book to be able to join in!
