Not everyone has 20/20 vision, or 20/60 or even 20/150. And lower contrast is an issue for people with vision problems.
If something is hard for me to read, I probably won't.

I was giving my opinion as an individual user more than a web developer looking for issues that any user may have. I always try to keep in mind in any design work that there will always be a user somewhere who does not agree with my design choices, whether they be due to usability or personal preference. As someone who uses contacts and glasses myself, I felt the contrast on this site was enough that most users would not have a problem. However, I agree more contrast is always a better idea than lower contrast.

Kristen Creager Hello all Brand Managers -- I am going to get my MBA, full-time. My goal job out of grad school is to work for a consumer goods company as an associate brand manager. From your experience, what would you recommend I do to get on the best path possible? What type of personality traits/work experience does one look for in a brand manager? Thanks for your input.

Kade Dworkin: Hi Kristen, First and foremost, good luck with your MBA. From personal experience it's a boatload of work. As someone who has been a community ...MoreHi Kristen, First and foremost, good luck with your MBA. From personal experience it's a boatload of work. As someone who has been a community manager for a large company and now am working agency side for internationally known brands there are some key traits I'm seen that might be really helpful to you.

The first and most obvious is choose a product that you're crazy passionate about. Without that nothing matters in the new online platforms. Once that's settled if that brand/product is already are speaking on the social networks, you should begin to engage both with the brand and the community. Get to know the people who are working on the inside (this can take some effort) and the brand evangelists who are doing this on their own time (you'll figure out who they are based on the number of comments/posts they produce). If there isn't a social networking platform already, 1) either choose another product who is (strongly recommended) or 2) start a platform.

One of the key things that I really look for is the ability to be optimistic while realistic about situations and being extremely good with the tools of the trade. In our case, that's things like data presentation skills, writing skills and understanding how to effectively use tools like Radian6. I also want people who can make something from nothing but their own time and sweat equity but who know exactly what they would do if they had $2500 or $10000 budget.

Finally after you've invested in the brand for a serious amount of time (9-12 months) if the brand manager or HR department hasn't contacted you, ask your contacts at the company to put you in touch with HR/Recruiting. Be humble and honest about your situation. While they may not be able to place you directly with the brand you're crazy passionate about at the start they won't miss out on the opportunity to redirect your passion to another product in their portfolio.

If you have more questions or simply want further input in private don't hesitate to tweet at me (@kadedworkin) and I'll follow you and give you my email address.

Kade

Charlie Anderson What the general thought on job candidates printing personal business cards? I know some people think it's a great idea and helps a candidate separate herself from both her current employer (if she has one) and the rest of the pack. But others think it's a tacky marketing ploy--perhaps because all that info is on a resume. Or maybe because so many people give themselves cheesy titles like "Digital Leader," "Web 2.0 Guru," or "Executive Professional." What do you guys think? Thumbs-up or down?

Are they any better than VistaPrint? [I think theirs are borderline shabby, personally.] I have a printer that prints two sided, full color, 5k cards for $100. bucks! If anyone wants his contact info let me know. He also does matching post cards which can be used for follow up personal thank you notes.

Or, if you're out with friends and discover someone your best friend knows could pass your name along to his/her HR department, again, handing out a business card is the easiest way to make sure they have all your info. As for the cheesy titles: don't be cheesy.

Ryan Paugh I freaking love these Honda Jazz ads >> http://bit.ly/9vnRcR If you haven't seen them it's because I think they only sell this car in Australia. In the US it's branded differently. Double high five to Honda for putting out an interesting ad campaign and of course for including hipsters in there. Gotta love hipster jokes. If you're down in Australia can you tell me how these ads were received? Honda should do a US-based campaign like this one.

Ryan Paugh Is anyone out there part of a company who is in the middle of a rebranding? I'm interested in hearing about some of the issues you are facing. Are you worried that your existing customers won't like your new look and feel? Comedy Central and Starbucks recently did a rebranding and they received a lot of negative feedback from their loyal followers. I'm wondering whether or not this will really affect them or if it's just natural reaction to change.

There might be compelling reasons to embark on rebranding but it could be counterproductive if its not properly handled. This is because humans generally detest change and naturally view it as distruptive. The solution to me is having a phased rebranding exercise. UPS is a good example of this, the company's brand identity has been undergoing periodic and subtle changes. Alries has a very good write up on this on his site

Since I haven't done this before and all my inspiration comes from online research I thought I'd ask for some input on which steps are necessary to take in ensuring one creates a valuable and representative corporate mission statement. Looking forward to gaining valuable feedback/insights on the matter.

I read an interesting article this weekend (Opinion: Customers want relationships, not low prices http://ln-s.net/7oBE) as a customer how have you seen businesses use social media to keep you loyal? And as a marketer/community manager what have you found works in social media engagement for your customer base?

My favorite personalized experience is always places that remember me. There are two local businesses I frequent - one is a laundromat where the owners, an older Spanish couple who don't speak much English, work the counter themselves. They always say hi and the gentleman tends to fall asleep watching tv in the corner. I feel good about supporting a small local business and find him endearing.

The other place I frequent is a corner store where I occasionally buy breakfast. They've memorized my order. I walk in, say Hi and can order the usual... it makes me go back again and again rather than trying the place across the street that offers the same options.

It's not necessarily the online social media that makes customers feel important. I also have a place I go to frequently because they know my name and my order. I live in an area where restaurants are a dime a dozen. I think there are 4 thai places with 5 miles of my apartment but I feel guilty if I don't go to the one where they know my name. I do think though that social media can allow brands to carry some of this feeling online. I recently had a large brand tweet me in response to a 4square checkin at their location. All they said was "hope you and your mom enjoyed lunch today. what did you get?" -- very simple but it worked (for me). I'll be back.

Cameron Plommer I have a blog, http://howtobeextraordinary.com and a website for a consulting business I want to start, http://cameronplommer.com. I am thinking about combining the two together -- taking the copy from cameronplommer.com (hire me pages and what not) and putting it on the blog, making it more of a business and not a blog. I would then use cameronplommer.com for an online resume type thing, I guess... Thoughts, opinions?

It still requires great ideas, excellent execution, relevant content...In fact probalbly more than ever, because opting out is really a click away
2: marketers not truly comminiting to getting this right. On-line needs longer term planning to stretch the idea out over time & resource to keep a high qual chatter going

It will proliferate to millions of sites and in doing so will challenge Google's search-based vision of the web's future with the possibility that the Internet likely may now shift to a social-discovery-based navigation paradigm.
