Erin Lariviere At Tungle.me, we just released a really cool project. We had ideas on what the calendar of the future should be, but wanted to hear from industry leaders. So we took it on the road & interviewed Robert Scoble, Don Dodge (Google), Ellen Levy (LinkedIn), Mark Hendrickson (Plancast), Ed Brill (IBM), Mike Brown (Facebook) and others. I want to invite you all to stop by and share your thoughts. Video replies are definitely welcome :) http://calendarofthefuture.com

People have a hard time making the connection between their physical business and interactive business. Because it is not something they are tangibly linked to in their regular lives. They look at it as a magical land outside the realms of reality. They can't seem to understand that it is a living breathing entity that is becoming the traditional business model.

I think social media skills can be taught in the classroom but only to a certain extent.
The media and tools used in business can be taught and then it's up to the student to engage and stay current with the field and its technology.
I think the social aspect of social media which includes the interaction with other people, identifying trends and implementing programs with success, etc. is the make or break component that is usually learned in the school of hard knocks (or not at all).

Erin Lariviere Do you use social media to prepare for conferences? We just posted some tips and tools on the Tungle.me blog (link below), but I'm interested to know, how have you used social media to prepare for upcoming events? Specifically large conferences like BlogWorld and SXSW. http://www.tungle.me/Home/blog/how-to-use-social-media-for-conference-prep/

Erin Lariviere Nice article from the Behance Team on OPENForum today - 5 Simple Lessons About Marketing, Strategy & Life http://bit.ly/bsCkfe #3 really resonated with me - especially this statement: "It’s easy for businesses to fall into using a vocabulary that’s completely self-referential." Have you or your company ever caught yourselves using 'internal' vocabulary externally?

It's so worth it to take a step (or five) back and realize you're using terms nobody else is going to get!

I've increasingly been making the work/life boundaries clearer so that when I'm home I don't have to worry about work and just have "play time" - I also love exercising which is some of the best "me time" we can have that also makes me feel productive :)

Ryan Paugh Brands REALLY want to connect with bloggers these days. The problem is that most brands don't really know how to communicate with bloggers. Press Releases don't work and those canned email messages suck. So what should brands do? As a blogger what positive and negative experiences have you had? As a PR/Marketing/Advertising professional what has worked for you? What hasn't worked?

@Ty -- I've seen it happen for a couple reasons. The two most common are that ...

1) The blogger wrote about the product/service and their marketing team caught on.
2) The blogger has been writing about a relevant topic and generated some great discussion.

I've seen it happen for other reasons too, but these are the most common I have seen. Anyone else know of reasons why brands have contacted bloggers that I am not mentioning???

More so, big PR agencies create mass lists and then email mass-pitches to bloggers. If you're in a PR database like Cision, then you're chances of being emailed are even more likely.

Some of the people here mentioned that they received personal pitches - which I love and am all for. If you're just emailing everybody at once, that's lame.

Seems I do some of my best thinking in there :) Actually, I find that things percolate or I observe something and it triggers a chain of thought that would be of interest to my readers. @Dave

This is my first time attending Blogworld, so I can't say from experience. What I've heard from past attendees is that it's an opportunity to meet fascinating people involved in social media of all types (not just blogging). It's also an opportunity to learn about what's working in social media, what's not and what's up and coming.
