TOP IDEA: Cameron Plommer I'm starting to realize that I don't need more information on HOW to do something. Instead what I find most useful is information (books, blogs, whatever) that inspires me to do something. Whether it's inspiration to learn a new topic, get in shape or be a better person. The How-to is only applicable at a low level because what works for one person may not work for another. With that said, what have you read or read regularly that inspires you?

The wisdom of that has played out as I've networked with Gen Y folks a few years younger than me (I'm in my early 30s), and constantly been inspired by their energy and enthusiasm to tackle exciting projects.

It is actually on my list of topics I want to blog about, since I am not exploring LinkedIn and other networking sites for career networking. Please let me know your thoughts. I can write a brief blog post and link it something you've written. Or I can share a copy of an article you've written and link it to other work you do. I'm new to this site, so I hope I'm using it correctly...

Bradley Bravard I'm a movie nut and have been collecting interesting movie quotes for years. I'm thinking about sharing these, maybe a "Movie Quote of the Day" kind of thing. I have no plans to monetize it, but might offer the database of quotes in exchange for a donation. And occasional links to movie reviews, trailers, etc. I'm uncertain about the best forum for this kind of thing. Facebook page? Wordpress? Tumblr? Something else? I'd really love some opinions on this.

Bradley,

I would use Wordpress and definitely shy away from Facebook. It's my understanding that anything posted to Facebook like that can be used by Facebook for its own purposes so in a sense you lose your exclusive rights to it. This includes pictures and any other content posted to your walls or pages. While you don't plan on making money off your collection of quotes, you may in the future choose to use them for something else. By then, however, the really good ones could have been used by Facebook for other purposes and a question may arise as to whether the quote was initially yours or came from Facebook. Also, I don't use Facebook to look up that kind of information, I stick to websites that appear in a Google or Bing search.

Also, while WordPress can be challenging to a novice, many "experts" are available to help you and if you have the time, you can learn on your own about blog pages, web site creation, how to use and insert images or plug-ins, etc. I'm not familiar with Tumblr because keeping up with Facebook, my Wordpress website and related blog, Linked In account and Brazen Careerist participation is enough for me.

What I would find most interesting from a "Movie Quote of the Day" would be those from older movies circa 1920s, 1930s, and, of course, the current films and all the classics. I sometimes want a suitable quote for a project or blog and may recall it came from an older classic, so have to research it. Your information would likely be of interest to me.

Good luck with you endeavor, whichever way you choose to go.

I personally believe that people should take ownership of their content and running their own blog whether that's WordPress, Drupal or whatever. It's just important not to create all your content inside of corporate silos. It's better for someone to publish on a WordPress blog with a plugin that pushes their posts to Tumblr, Facebook and Twitter.

YouTube is a little different because 1) it's hard for average people to encode and publish video on the web without the help of a YouTube, Vimeo, or the like. 2) They aren't creating their content on YouTube, but rather they are just publishing it. In theory they could cross post to Vimeo if YouTube banned them.

If we talking about purely moving up the ladder to the next title then you are probably right. For me I feel like my career grew as I gained more experiences and skills from each lateral move. I even made a lateral move from one large company to another. When I finally did move up the ladder, I was actually able to use the experiences from each move to get the promotions because I could show how each position helped prepare me for that new higher role. On the other hand I have seen people make lateral moves that did not seem connected mainly because they saw a higher paycheck or hated their current position. This made it harder for them to speak to why they had made lateral moves rather than upward ones. In that case, I would say that can hurt or slow down your career progression. Also, I think it comes down to the individual. Not everyone is motivated by climbing the ladder, some are more motivated by taking on new challenges and can be happy at a certain level. I have talked to more and more recruiters that don't necessarily see this as a bad thing like they did in the past. As long as you can show that you are effective at what you do and can learn something new and solve the problems they are looking to have solved.
