Laura McCallum Has anyone else seen this video entitled "Validation"? No matter who we are, and what we do, we all seek to be validated by others. This 16 minute short film is well worth the watch - and you may find your business picking up as a result! I liked it so much, I put it on my home page. By the way, all Brazen Careerists rock! You are awesome and you are great! :>) I'd love to hear what you think of it! You'll never look at a smile the same way again. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cbk980jV7Ao

Bear in mind that a true CV will include a list of all of your publications, posters, oral presentations, etc. My full CV is about four pages, but I also have a one page version which includes a line that says that a list of my publications, patents, and presentations are available upon request.

Even though I did my degree in the UK, out of the 91 students, 27 different countries were represented, and only 11 were native english speakers (of which I was only 1 of 3 Americans). Groups were set up to have 1 native english speaker (if possible), 3 students from India (roughly 1/2 the course was from there), and then to fill in the rest with different nationalities and work backgrounds. Definitely brought some unique challenges.

The biggest thing I took away from the MBA though (as well as the other students) was developing a strategic perspective. I know I definitely view the world in a different light, breaking down and handling things better than I did before. It might sound simple from an outsiders perspective, but to be able to understand why certain things happen, and developing effective action plans forward, is probably the greatest tool gained by the MBA process.

Stephanie Springer If you're in Boston or attending ACS, and you're interested in meeting chemists who are interested in social media, there will be a tweetup on Monday, August 23rd at 8 pm at Anthony's Pier 4. It is timed to coincide with the American Chemical Society meeting (although this is offsite so you won't need to attend the conference to attend the tweetup).

Kerry Hey all... I have a background in marine biology with a minor in chemistry. Most of my research has been invertebrate physiology based. I have always considered trying to get a position in marine pharmacology or natural products. If I ever decided to pursue this idea, what would you recommend I go back to school for, pharmacy, biotech, biochem? B.S., M.S.? Or do I even need to go back to school?

David Galley Not sure if this is appropriate - I know a lot of folks here are more on the research side than business support services side - but if anyone knows someone looking for an HR "internship" (aka 7 month temp job to cover an LoA) at MSD (for MRL Boston HR), please drop me a line. Request is pretty generic on description - should be comfortable doing low-level line HR and/or clerical/admin work. Recent grad, 1-2 years max exp, great pay. Not sure if they'll take someone more experienced.

Stephanie Springer What are your thoughts on biotech/pharma recruiters and headhunters? Are they still needed? If you get a cold call from a recruiter, do you have to be actively looking for a job in order to respond, or are you always on the hunt?

I look forward to seeing some more responses from industry professionals, though - always good to have more insight into what it takes to get folks to call me back. Sent out 100 e-mails on friday to PhD chemists in Boston for 1 year contract op (physicochemical characterization w/in PR&D), 2 bounced, 4 replied, 94 had no response. Phone calls always do a bit better but are a much slower process.

I would assume that you're including a job description in your e-mails to describe exactly what that job entails.

What I've been told is that if you don't call and engage someone in conversation, and SELL the job to them (even if they're not in the market), they won't reply. That's the part that I don't get - how do you create that need? How do you make a candidate feel that this job opportunity is spectacular and that they NEED to apply?

Kate L. Greetings from an R&D Outsourcing Manager at a mid-size pharma in Chicago. Anyone headed here for the BIO conference in May? If not, why not? If so, are you attending as a volunteer or representing your company/university? I attended BIO 2006 and was impressed with the value of $250 exhibition hall pass (which was all I could afford!). I received three job offers, made a ton of contacts, and had a fun time in Boston. Care to share any of your own tips for maximizing the conference experience?

David Galley Wanted to run this by the group: have received repeated requests from a large pharma client (NJ HQ, large Boston research facility) for BS+ degreed lab techs / jr scientists with extensive lab automation experience (hands on stuff - troubleshooting, programming, etc). By extensive, they mean it would need to be part of daily job functions for at least 12 months. Rates tend to be $16-$20/hr range. Do such people exist in the Boston area?

I definitely empathize with you on trying to transition within a company. I have found myself in a similar situation. It's sad that an employer would rather lose a motivated worker than help mentor them into a new role, but ultimately they are a business and they aren't there to help you reach your personal goals.
