Ty Unglebower Last night at around 3:00AM I at last finished the rough draft of my novel! It's a relief and exciting at the same time. I got the general idea about 18 months ago, inspired by several things. And I went through a dry spell of writing nothing in it for two months or so. Now I will put it away fro about three months, and this begin first revisions which I hope to have completed by October.

(just finished one of my own so know what a relief it is to finally reach the end). Then of course the whole process of trying to find a publisher etc. begins. I know from past experience that this is often more taxing than the actual writing.

Ty Unglebower I just wanted to share with everyone my latest column over at Showbizradio.net. I talk about the need for all actors to take a few moments alone to focus before they perform. (It's not as common a practice as you would hope.) http://www.showbizradio.net/2011/04/06/get-centered/

Ty Unglebower My "other" blog, (The one that isn't Too XYZ. Did you know I had one??) is celebrating 5 years in existence today! It's called Always Off Book, and it has been a place for me to share my thoughts and feelings about acting, as well as relay the specific adventures in any given production. Traffic has never been high for some reason, but nonetheless today I posted about what I hope it has accomplished these last 5 years. http://bit.ly/do1aGL

Ty Unglebower Yet another prime example of what I have mentioned and blogged about before; http://bit.ly/aAwygN. Vancouver Opera has got it right when it comes to actually engaging it's community and sparking an interest in the arts, without diluting the product, or appearing as an elitist megalith of high culture that you couldn't possibly appreciate. More arts organizations should follow suit. I've said itbefore, and will again.

Frank E. Warren: My question is; why is it that America "couldn't possibly appreciate" high culture? Whatever the answer, it is a disgrace.

But I feel that cultural organizations tend to set themselves up as these huge, elitist institutions, who feel they don't need to give back to interact with the community. That by being open about what they do, having an outreach, or doing anything other than asking for donations to get people involved, they feel they are being less artistic somehow. Vancouver Opera has proven this doesn't have to happen.

But above anything, people want to make sure you can do the job well and contribute to the company. So it doesn't matter how pretty your resume is necessarily, as long as the right proof points are listed.

Ty Unglebower It's starting to happen in the United States, but other countries are still ahead in their integration of social media with the arts. It's time to accept that the arts are really nothing at all if they can't be a personal experience for everyone. Not just to the actual works and performances, but to the nature of those who produce them. Make the arts personal, and more will enjoy them. My thoughts: http://bit.ly/bjENm8

Ty Unglebower Here is an interesting piece I saw pertaining to how social media is being used by the arts community in Australia. Very interesting piece, and the arts community in the states could learn from this. I can't say I approve of letting people tweeting from the audience during a show, but there are lots of ideas here that I think, if given widespread acceptance, could significantly aid the arts community here. http://bit.ly/dkBCmj

Ty Unglebower Here is an interesting take an an equally interesting article about whether or not a liberal arts education would kill the talents and instincts needed to succeed at business. The author says no, and so do I, but ONLY for businesses with a broader view. Sadly, those are in the minority. http://bit.ly/dCnSl9

I think many times people fail to see the connection between ecosystems and their parts. What I mean by this is that businesses are made up of the same poor performing people that we see rampant all over the place. Now take a business and fill it will all those crappy people and you have one big crap hill... And it makes me really question the intelligence of others who walk around with their arms up in disbelief at how things have gone to complete ruin. or are going to complete ruin... That was a rant do with it as you wish.

Juha Liikala I have a copyright related question about selling Art reproductions. I have a friend who makes pencil drawings. She asked me if it would be possible for her to sell pencil art reproductions (on her website) from the pictures / artwork she or the clients of her's find from the Internet. Example: - Her client sends her a link to a Sean Connery shot from a James Bond movie. Can she make pencil reproduction of that picture and sell it to her client without breaking some copyright laws?

Antoinette Wright Vanessa, I just completed my website which I am super excited about..when I am selling my paintings alot of people preferred to simply go to my website rather than stop and take a look at my paintings...so hopefully this will generate business with those who are "on the go!" To make a living from selling paintings you have to work HARD and have that hunger and it has paid off.

My art time is very limited these days. I work and after work I could quite still be working or am too tired to do anything of any artistic value. Though I have now made a point to try and work on my paintings. Also, in the meantime, trying to get my comic samples done. Vanessa Alvarado Hi JP! And nice to see you've joined the BC.com Destinie! JP, do you have a career in art? There’s a tiny bit of art in my career in marketing, but not the work that satisfies the soul or the muse. Not typical in corporate work. I do spend my weekends perusing artistic stimulation. Tomorrow I’ll interview a very talented mixed media artist with a quaint “folk art” style- I can’t wait to talk to her & pick up a piece.
