Dana Leavy One of the biggest barriers to entry for young people wanting to start a business or strike out on their own as freelancers is finances: how to save/get the money to start up, determining how much you need to do so, and what to expect when it comes to properly managing and planning it. Dana Leavy Evaluating your competition as an entrepreneur or job seeker is natural, but it's easy to fall into the trap of looking at the surface, evaluating what they're doing & wondering, "well why aren't I there yet?" Dana Leavy When you work for yourself, as a freelancer, small business owner, etc., it can be easy to let time get away from you or lose your motivation or train of thought to outside distractions. Dana Leavy I often hear from people about different side ventures they've started in addition to their full time jobs as financial safety nets. It's hard to trust in the "stability" of a full time job anymore. But if you participate in the dialogue, as Dana is suggesting, in many industries you will make good connections that will lead to employment. That is how I did it (just got my post-graduation job yesterday. Super stoked!).

However, I would also say that in many places volunteering can lead to excellent experience. I was the PR manager for a 14,000 person convention, dealing directly with many TV and movie stars and their agents. I was unpaid. It was technically volunteer. If you keep your eyes out for opportunities like this, or blatantly create them, you'll be ahead of the other job seekers.

Dana Leavy There's much information out there on how to conduct your job search, it's hard to know where to start, who to follow and what to trust. The 'experts' can give you a great 'jumping off point', but how you integrate the information is what makes a difference. A good way to look at it is also how I like to help people take perspective on networking. Sometimes it's not an immediate pop, but the idea is to create and continue to grow a relationship with someone, and continue to stay in touch with the objective of staying on their radar. Whether it's a recruiter, or a hiring manager you met at an event, keeping the relationship going and staying on their radar positions you as someone who's interested and qualified for any opportunities that might come across their desk. That way, when they do, and they need to be filled immediately, they think of you and reach out.

And I don't think there is such a thing as a perfect placement. Some things are better fit then others. Same with trying to find the best candidate. As Voltaire said, Perfect is the enemy of good. I believe that in both the recruiting industry and the job market in general, people shoot themselves in the foot by passing over good opportunities, jobs, employees, etc trying to find "better" ones that are really no guarantee of performing any better than the good.
