Amber S. Has anyone established a virtual accounting firm? If so, what has been your biggest challenge and which company do you think provides the biggest bang for your buck in integrating systems. I'm considering Reuters.

With an accounting degree, I can get a job in accounting or in any other business related field. However, if I had chosen a general business degree or finance degree, I couldn't get a job in public accounting.

I went into accounting because I really believe it is the heart and soul of a business. I want to be apart of that. Everything goes through accounting and as an accountant you have to be knowledgable, expect challenges, and a problem solver. Glad someone shares my interest thanks Crystal.

Getting the chance to talk about yourself beyond the usual cover letter and resume really helps. Having them hear your voice and what you say fleshes you out more.

The Michigan Association of CPAs has their "New Professionals Task Force" (as well as other task forces). It's mainly for CPAs who earned their licenses within the last 6 years, accounting grads who are planning to sit for the CPA exam, people who have passed the exam and are working toward their licenses, and current accounting students. A number of our members have found jobs with the help of other members of the task force. I'm pretty sure at least some other state accounting associations have similar groups.

Ryan Healy My undergrad degree is in accounting, and it was definitely one of the best decisions I have ever made. I wouldn't consider myself an accountant, but when you're running a business, you need to understand the finances at a basic level at the very least. Plus, if you're not a developer or designer, you need some kind of hard skill when you start a company. Anyone else use their accounting background/knowledge for their small business or start up?

N I'm looking for an accountant. I have no independent turnover yet, but I know from experience that I should hire the accountant first (I loathe the form filling that is required in the UK). I'm currently full time employed, but I plan to freelance at the same time.

I tried to spend some time each day studying but it was difficult with work, etc. I think a study group that meets once a week or so where you can get together and hold one another accountable would be helpful. What section are you preparing for?
