Ryan Paugh What do you guys think of Gmail's modifed UI? I've been stumbling a bit this morning while trying to compose new messages but I think I've got a hang of it now. At the moment I'm still partial to the old sidebar but I'm sure I'll warm up to the layout of the new one.

I wouldn't even consider contacting anyone in the company about an internal transfer opportunity without first making sure my Google Resume is up-to-date, since I know this is one of the first things that will be looked at.

I would be sure to quantify everything possible. How much revenue have you generated? Or how big were the campaigns that you managed? Did you lead any improvement projects that had a clear and measurable positive result? Information like this can definitely add more perspective for the hiring manager.

In addition, I would add a few key qualitative points as well. Generally, promotion includes increased responsibility and/or possible management/supervision. Although quantitative data is a great way to bring value to your achievements, a few bullet points talking about when you've demonstrated leadership, juggled priorities under tight deadlines, etc are a great approach as well. You can still translate those things into hard numbers though. i.e. Led a committee of 12 staff members in outbound marketing project which resulted in 15 new clients, Coordinated launch of new inventory management system, later implemented across all 8 departments within the company, etc.

Rebecca, Miri, and Raquel all have some great thoughts above to help us get started with this, I think.

I LOVE Dan's Autonomy/Mastery/Purpose framework, I just find it feels a little vague on answering that "how" for most people. Engagement always happens at a "local level," meaning at the manager/employee connection. So, much of the "how" gets answered in the context of that relationship. Happy to elaborate if you like. Love this stuff!

Basically, it is core to the success of any company... It is like a watch mechanism - if all parts work well and are connected then the watch works well, if any element of the internal mechanism is broken or disconnected, the watch will stop or will show wrong time...
