Suzanne Kaplan Hi. Looking for advice on how to rebrand myself. I'm an unemployed high school English teacher who is getting experience in fundraising, social media (via blogging), and careerism (via blogging). Interested in the intersection of education and nonprofits, yet am open to other possibilities. Any advice for rebranding? No idea how to change my resume, and even what types of jobs I'm qualified for. Learn more about me at jobtalknj.com (blog). Or through here. Thanks in advance! Suzanne

Suzanne,

Since you have experience as a teacher have you ever thought about teaching a class on Fundraising? That would be a good way to interact with people and continue branding yourself as an industry expert. Thoughts?

The idea never even came to me! I'll keep it in the back of my mind. Not sure I have enough experience to do it now, but down the road, it may be a possibility, especially just trying to do it as a workshop locally. Suzanne

Eric B. Horn: Suzanne, Not a problem. I'm curious to know why don't you think you have enough experience right now to conduct a workshop on Fundraising?

The rebranding, may quickly lead to rebranding again. You could of course always brand yourself as someone who is searching.

My humble advice would be to check out a book like "What Color is Your Parachute?" by Richard Bolles which does a great job of helping to align what you are go at with potential opportunities.

Mike Bruny

Branding is good when you have a solid message, but if you are searching, your message will be that you are searching, which does have a place too, but will require changing once you've "found" what you'd like to do next.

I do think that being a teacher is a great springboard into just about any leadership role because of your ability to public speak and direct large groups.

Hi Suzanne,

I agree with the previous comments on rebranding and also volunteering. Volunteering is way to get that start-up experience and you can also request people's comments / feedback / recommendations which you can put on your website (with their permission of course). Why not just market yourself and just add to your profile as you develop new skills?
Regards,
Michael.
