Kim N. Campbell For those of you who are freelancing your services (especially in marketing/communications/writing capacities) how do you price your service? Where do you even begin to look for assessing the value of your work?

I've gotten jobs for 75c per word and $1.50 per word, but I try not to stray too far from the norm. It just depends on what I'm willing to accept and how much the client is willing to pay.

But I got some really good advice from an older freelancer the other day. He said that you should price your work like businesses do: look at your overhead costs, equipment costs and how much your expertise is worth per hour to come up with costings. So far, its served me pretty well on my last couple of publications management jobs.

If I think that my help will help clients save a lot of money, I communicate that value before I present a quote.

I'm not sure that translates well into freelance writing, but it works for stats/eval consulting.

I don't think that would suit this particular project because I may be conceptualizing content for their newsletter which includes a lot more than just the writing...and I'd want that time to be part of this too.

Stephen: I like that you show the value before giving a quote. Sets up expectations fast.

@Karolyn, lol @facebook and the Ex. you know, depending on what the project looks like, I think I am going to go an hourly rate. Or give her a quote that represents the anticipated number of hours it would take for me to complete the task at a given rate.

Thanks everyone!
