Kenji Crosland Read this article recently which talks about a "Crisis in the personal development movement" (http://bit.ly/daLuaZ) Do you think the personal development movement needs to be more evidence based? It seems dangerous for self-help gurus to give advice based on anecdotes and their own personal observations alone when so many people rely on what they say.

If you compare this to how pharmaceuticals work, there are significant differences. Yes, there are some methods that work for more people than other methods, but to really look down on one there needs to be some proof of harm. Maybe this is the evidence basis we need.
The users need to make sure that what they follow makes sense for them, so perhaps we needs some interactive system for choosing the methods for personal development.

The profession is largely about catalysis - getting people out of their stuck or inhibited ways. What kind of new behaviour they embark upon is almost irrelevant so long as it it more functional.

Often, a coach doesn't even instruct a particular methodology - they are simply an 'aura' and what they do is more akin to healing than training.

That said, I've thought about your question before, and see the profession undergoing a dramatic cut-back if 'coaches' had to track the clients development and expose that data.... and that is for no stronger reason than it is 'too math' for most coaches. They would have to band into coaching studios, like designers do.

Which... FTR.... will happen in time, I'm convinced, as people demand evidence of Shift. Maybe after 2012? :)

But the difficulty too is that many of these issues are not measured so tangibly and good common sense from coaches and clients is the best regulator.

@Slawomir - An interactive system would be good. I'm wondering what that would entail...

@Zachary - I agree. Improved performance of the client is probably the best measure. Scientific studies can't account for a the instinct that certain coaches may have to guide one person one way and another person another way. THAT can be difficult to quantify. Coaching studios WOULD be a good way of going about it. Different schools of thought can band together and determine what works best for them as coaches.

@Caroline - Regulation would be good, although I wonder how practical it would be. Maybe we could require every coach to get some sort of certification, like physical therapists or chiropractors? Or is coaching too "varied" a discipline to have such certs.

As coaching requires a functional, action-oriented client I don't feel it's a stretch to require the client to do his/her own due dligience. When I hire coaches for myself, I don't value the certification, and I'd like to have the option to choose whom to hire.
