TOP IDEA: Maura V. Pingor If I were to chose 1 experience that has had a major influence in whom I am today, I say it's the opportunity I was given to live in & visit differenct countries: when I was 7 my family moved from Argentina to Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. When I was 21 I moved to the US. I have also visited multiple countries. Being exposed to so many different cultures has had a HUGE impact in my life (personally and professionally). Do you have one thing you can point to as a major driver of whom you are today?

I can also pinpoint an event that changed my course in life-- a high school service learning trip to Nicaragua. Before the trip, I had started to look at colleges and was planning on majoring in biology (and was planning on dropping Spanish classes for my senior year). After I got back, I switched to looking at schools for Latin American Studies, and continued to take Spanish until ultimately majoring in it in college (where I studied abroad in Argentina!). That one experience drove me in a direction that I would never have imagined previously.

I never failed in my life or had poor grades and honestly that F shocked the mess out of me, it came right from left field! I thought I'd never get into an Ivy League for grade school. The failure led me to living in Quebec city, Quebec, Canada and studying French and watching Wycleff Jean play his guitar with his tongue next to a chic snorting some drug up a straw. I had no idea what the world was about. I was independent and gained an experience, like yours in a way, that has led me to attending the very grad school I wanted to attend, and the job I have right now (along with many other things). I guess, in the midst of chaos I found the beauty!

Your insights are interesting and inspiring. Hmmm, for me, a major driver was finding myself homeless in high school. I worked full time, attended school, lived in a car and went on to put myself through college. I still feel as if I can accomplish anything.
