Cameron Plommer http://ow.ly/21SB3 In my Untemplater article I wrote how Americans are dependent on others for employment. For me as an unemployed grad, I've proactively tried to better myself. I've started a blog, networked and met new people (on and offline), and started a few cool projects. The point is, sure I'm looking for the right job in the field I want to pursue (marketing, project management), but I'm also using my time to grow professionally and personally. What are you doing while unemployed?

I love the title of the post :)

I was talking to a family member the other day about how she hated her job, but felt so dependent on her company for making money, having benefits, etc, etc. I keep pushing her to make more time to network, maybe even start a blog. She won't do this though because like so many other people she's convinced that there's nothing she can do to take her life into her own hands.

I'm going to have to send her your post for inspiration.

I just received my bachelor's degree in journalism and will return in the fall to finish my master's degree in marketing communications. So that leaves the summer. I tried to get a bunch of internships but nothing worked out. So I was down to basically two choices: work at some full-time job lifting boxes for the summer and be too tired by the time I get home to do much else or focus this summer on building myself up so come next summer, when I'm officially done with school, I'll have even more real-worled experience when looking for a job. So far I've written a few freelance articles for local newspapers and am hoping to do some volunteer marketing and/or grant proposal writing this summer. I won't be able to buy the new things I had wanted this summer, like a new computer, but I guess it's more important to keep alive professionally than financially at this point in life! Whew, probably a lot more than you wanted, but thanks!

As an organizational psychologist who works with recent grads I am constantly pushing on young job seekers to take this opportunity to be introspective and really think about what you are about, where you can make an impact, and how to differentiate what you have to offer from the other 15 million job seekers out there right now!!!

Sean Masters: @Dr.Woody how often do you find yourself working with recent grads vs those with a year or more left before graduation?

I was recently the keynote speaker at the Florida Career Professionals Association (college career center counselors) where I had some great conversations about changing the mindset of how graduating seniors prep for this market. check out my site: www.DrWoody.com

So many people get hung up on not finding a job and they should look at how they can better their life themselves and look at opportunities that are out their to teach them how to be in charge of their own future. People made money during the depression, but schools don't teach that.

Cameron you need to go to my website at the-team.biz/1693745 and look at this opportunity. They are looking for some ambitious people to help market their products and have just hit over 2.5 billion in just 5 years. They have great leaders to help us succeed. Email me at changeyourlife@yahoo.com if you want to know where a meeting is close you.

@Ruth I love your story. Keep up the good work!

@Dr. Woody sounds like you have a cool job. I'd like to do work like that. I think I have a perspective that a lot of students could value from. I'm working on a project to help people figure out "what they want to be when they grow up," actually.
