Carmille A friend recommended me to try: http://www.openoffice.org/ . What are your experiences with OpenOffice? Any better alternatives?

It gets the trick done but is not as slick as Microsoft office. Also there may be some formatting incompatibilities when people open your open office documents with Microsoft office. I eventually got a student/home edition of Microsoft office 3 licenses for $99.

Carmille: Thanks, James. I've got Microsoft Office, but am looking for an alternative to project management and also saving files to an external hardrive.

OpenOffice is just a free suite of packages that can be used in place of MS Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. I found OpenOffice applications very good for the basic capabilities of MS Office. However, if currently us MS Office, I think you may feel like you are going backwards. If you are sharing with people who use OpenOffice, it could be the way to go if you need to share. That way you would be using functions that they do not have. If you want to share files on a common drive, you may want to use MS Live or Google Doc. I found this comparison on line: http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/office_live_workspace_vs_google_doc.... For project management, you may want to check out MS Project or a opensource (read that as free) project management software called Workbench at http://www.openworkbench.org/. I have used MS Project, over kill for what I was doing, I will be try OpenWorkbench the next time to see how it works. Good Luck

: Carmille - I think it is a phenomenal program. I use it in Linux and have had NO heartache from the lack of word, or any other microsoft programs.

For project management I use a couple of tools. MindJet MindManager8 is my favorite project management tool. I use this program at work, home, civic engagements....everywhere. Best tool out there. For pure project management, I don't think it gets much better than OpenProj. It's opensource/free, and it has the most detailed and intricate step-by-step project planning program out there. I would highly recommend both of these programs.

Is it worth transitioning to OpenOffice if I'm just going to have to switch back in a year or so? (I'm not particularly a fan of Microsoft, but my clients use Office, so I use it for compatibility reasons.)

(However, I do run into issues at one job where everyone else there uses MS Suite on Windows 7.) Also, it is open source, which means those with know-how can help modify it - something I think is wonderful both in theory and practice, and which is the direct reason OO is so much improved. Good luck making your decision!

The shortcut functions are quite different & there were formatting issues from between Open Office & Word.

Todd Nilson: OpenOffice works great. It's just not quite as pretty as the Microsoft Office Suite.
