I'm in B2B sales, so using customer service to build relationships is key. My system is to track repeat customers, and then again when people go from requesting bids to just sending me work. What industry are you thinking about?

Any thoughts for quantitative results?

I use SurveyMonkey, its free for basic functions, to write surveys on up to 8 questions. Asking the customer to rate a particular attribute of the service or product on a 1 to 10 scale. I add a comment section for each question. Sometimes this leads me to some ideas about what to improve. Drop the responses into a spreadsheet and calc avg, std dev and plot distribution. I have developed some really actionable responses to my surveys, in 3 different jobs, and have seen significant improvements over several year periods.

We were able to collect meaningful material that was able to lead us to conclusions, but there were a couple of keys that helped us. 1) Careful, meticulous wording of your survey. The better you know your audience, the closer you can tailor your verbage. 2) Flow, & building rapport. We wrote 5 versions of the same survey & with each re-write we improved the order of the questions to encourage the reader to trust us. The more trust you can garner the better and more honest your data will be. 3) Pretest, pretest, pretest. So many of the changes we made came from offering the survey to small groups of customers. Time & money may play a big role here, but the more you can do to pretest, the better the quality of your survey will be therefore providing more relevant results.
