elizabeth I just started a social networking website. I have been reading and reading about people w successs what their methods were & I can"t figure them out. All the articles say t same things along the lines of "they started this in their garages and started out with 100 people and now have 30 million members. However, they never say what they did in between. How do you get more members? What are the tricks in between?

When what is common is established, you can make the network unique with features important to the group. The goal would be to make the intended members attracted to your network by offering something which is unique and cannot be found elsewhere. After making the first steps with the unique features, you can go and look for potential members on other networks and spread the word.
Important is to always keep listening to your members, saying yes to the new requests that helps to goal of your network and no to the requests that don't. Be real and transparent about that.

And always: keep the conversation going!

Good luck!

A combination of Luck, skill and timing has allowed them to succeed where thousands of other people have failed.

I am so sorry that I am just now getting bacx to you guys. I have something to say in response to both of you. Joop, that is some great advice about "keeping the coversation going." I started my site bc of the idea not because the social networking was hot and/or because successful ones were goldmines. I am not going to lie about the fact that i hope to make money. in a nutshell, i would not have put up a site if i didnt think or actually know that I had something that women needed and wanted. My site is www.whyheisajerk.com. it is for women to get support for anything ranging from abandament and/or cheating or to complain about how their so is perfect in every way except for that he leaves the toilet seat up for example. I thought that I could put the thing up and it would grow automatically bc it is such a great ideaa. however, I am learning that is not the case. It takes so much and i just dont know what to do next. I thought that I had the internet entreprenuer world figured out but I am realizing that it is not as straightforward as the non cyberworld. If you guys could do me a favor if you get a minute, could you look at my site and tell me what to do to promote it, I would really appreciate it. Again, it is www.whyheisajerk.com. Bradley, I am aware about how goofy and neive that I may possibly sound to you but I believe that anyone that doesn"t give up can accomplish anything. Again, thank you, both.

One main comment: if there is not so much content (yet) on the website, keep it simple. You enabled all options on the website (blogs, chat, forum, groups) and all have only a few posts. I would start with one feature -maybe the blogs?- and only add the groups if there is enough content to support it.
Second comment about the homepage. I would add one element, a button or a form, something where the passer-by of the website can start adding content (a rant?) directly.

Hope this helps. :)

Too much to do on that site, and too soon. Also, "man bashing site" term you use on the home screen jumps up at me. I feel it would turn a lot of women off because its such a subjective word with a negative connotation. Otherwise, promote the hell out of it. Send the site to your local media centers. Post about on big, relevant, and well known blogs, push it through a video on youtube. As always it isn't the product, but the advertising of that product that makes what you do a success or not.

If your doing something you love, because you love it then its worth it. If your doing something because you want to make is successful than you need to look at the real possibilities and chances.

After working/ owning a start up now for a number of years, I can tell you it does take a lot of work even for a little success, so you'd better either really love it or have realistic expectations, preferably both.

All that aside, one good point is that you certainly know your audience, the only question is what kind of recurring community are you going to build?

I definitely see there being angry , spurned women out there, but they aren't going to stay angry forever. Eventually they'll fall in love again, how are you planning on keeping them coming to your site? Do you want them to or do you only want them there for a little while as their rage is still fresh?
Just some thoughts

The reason why I put up the groups is so that when women go to it, they will see topics that they can relate to and I wasn"t sure of another way to do it. I guess I can put more topics in the tabs. I started all the groups. What do you guys think?

They'll go to your site, rant and carry on, then meet someone new and likely abandon your site the way they might abandon match.com when they're with Mr. Man of their Dreams.

Also, in any promotion of your site, might I suggest you share how it differs from the time-honored standard of getting together with your in-real-life girlfriends to lament the foibles of the men in your life.

Just putting it out there...
