Delta Waters Penelope...I just started a new resume writing business focusing on teens, new grads and peeps with gaps in their work histories. I Twitter, I'm getting listed, got followers, got my website...whew! Do i really need to blog too? They're so ubiquitous...would it be like pissing in the ocean?

The whole idea of digital media is that you can now connect without a "written" resume that you send by snail mail and then get a job. Potential employers can "see" your stuff here, linkedin, facebook, etc. What is the need for a resume? Just my thoughts.

That said, a blog on how teens can use a resume to get a job would be a great blog. There is a dearth of information on this topic. Though honestly, I think there might also be a dearth of teens who read blogs. I'm not sure.

There are too many services out there. I think that whatever you think is your differentiator should be the focus of your blog, and if you don't think you can differentiate in the blogosphere, then you definitely can't do it in the larger, real world.

Teens still use paper resumes for summer jobs, grads still need ones to apply for grad school.LinkedIn and other online applications still need a coherent, branded document that will sell the person to post. most folks here are super social media savvy which is merely an augmentation to a resume, not a replacement. Every one of the dozens of resumes i've worked on are, frankly, pathetic.

penelope, thanks for the straight-up reply. I do have things to say regarding branding, job searches, social media, etc.i feel i can really connect with teens, and young adult. work history gaps is another focus. hhhmmm...need to hone it down, but...the question remains...is blogging effective marketing?

But I think with the teen resume business you actually need to target the kids' parents, and schools that might bring you in to help multiple students or give a speech at an assembly. You can definitely use a blog to target parents of teens. I mean, then you are sort of looking for that mommy blogger type audience -- moms who are involved with their kids who read blogs. That is a huge audience.

If you don't know if there is a market for your blog start with a newsletter - you can send it out less frequently, and it lets yo you collect contact info. These people can later likely be transitioned to an RSS feed easily. Then, make your newsletters viewable on your website.

Recent NYTimes article on sophistication of mommy bloggers: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/14/fashion/14moms.html ... Sounds like a guest post opportunity.

melissa, i love your advice, thanks...

Even if you don't have a formal resume that you send out the old fashioned way, people still need help generating the content for places like LinkedIn. Most people just don't have the communication skills to effecitvely describe what they've done and why it's important. As someone who reads resumes all the time, I can say that's still true regardless of age!

In my opinion, the biggest distinguisher in this business is to do a bang up job on the content. Too many people focus on format instead of verb choice and impact.

Good luck!
