Erica I'm working on re-tooling my resume and could use advice on how to best market my education. I went straight into an M.A. program out of undergrad. Been working part-time positions with a non-profit for the last year, but not in the field in which I got either of my degrees. Some friends have been hesitant to add their M.A. to their resume in fear that it will hinder job prospects -- is there any evidence to bear this out? How can I best market my education, in light of limited experience? Thx!

They can bring out the best of your past experience, whether gleaned from full- or part-time work, and make your resume so powerful that the last thing someone will wonder about is "did she or didn't she" get an MA! (And I'm against hiding the truth; a pro can help you shape your message.)

Look for companies you'd like to work for, see what problems they have you'd be able to help with, and then think of a way your education could be used to help solve that problem.

I agree with Scott.

And, getting back on my soapbox, then take that information to a professional resume consultant (not a typist, not your friend whose resumes look pretty good, but a pro). He/she can help you write the best letter and resume you can and then base ALL FUTURE JOB SEARCH MATERIALS on it.

How much did you spend on the clothing you'll be wearing to the interviews? Wanna get your resume into the "A" stack...or not...it's up to you.

If you believe me, but you simply cannot afford it, then ask your parents to give it to you for your birthday, the holidays, and/or because it will deliver a return on investment their invest likes of which they've never seen!

Get the job one week earlier or even if you get a job that only pays $1,000 more/year, a reasonable investment in quality documents once or twice in your life will definitely pay off.

I have heard circumstantial feedback from others through my career that having a Ph.D. is a more difficult situation to sell, simply because it more strongly suggests that you are most interested in research and academia. However, a master's degree should not pose a problem.

I have clients who struggle explaining their Phds to MBA types all of the time. People with Masters degrees do not seem to have the problem as long as they can translate their experience well. As Linda said, work with a pro who understands your goals and intentions and can re-word your communication to achieve your objectives.

Erica: Thanks for the input guys. I've still got a lot of thinking to do about where I want to end up, but what you've said has been helpful!
