Where ambitious young professionals connect and grow

What should you do to repair a relationship with a client or coworker after you've had a blow-up?

If you feel you contributed to a negative situation: 1) Acknowledge the situation clearly and directly. "I feel really awkward that I raised my voice in the marketing meeting and cut you off in mid-sentence." 2) Apologize for your behavior. "I am really sorry if I hurt your feelings/pissed you off."

If you feel you contributed to a negative situation:

  1. Acknowledge the situation clearly and directly. "I feel really awkward that I raised my voice in the marketing meeting and cut you off in mid-sentence."
  2. Apologize for your behavior. "I am really sorry if I hurt your feelings/pissed you off."
  3. Ask for his/her perspective "What was your take on the situation? How did you feel when it happened?"
  4. Ask what you can do to make it right. "How can I rectify this situation?
  5. Thank the person for their time and move forward in a positive way. "Thanks for talking this through with me."

Once you have had this conversation, don't linger on the negative incident. Just make sure to honor the commitments you made to change your behavior moving forward. Actions speak much louder than words.
