I just moved to a city where I have few professional connections. Networking and inside connections are key to getting jobs in many companies. What can I do to a) find companies that have good jobs available and b) get hired without these connections?

Email ThisNetworking has to start somewhere, so target some regular events that will have the kinds of people and companies you'd love to work with/for. You do know the kinds of companies you'd love to work for, right?
If you have a hit-list of 20 companies in your new city you can often find out the name of an HR contact by digging around online, then you can get in touch directly with your resume and a compelling cover letter. You don't have to know they have a position open for you to get in touch with them and it shows initiative and drive to do all of this off your own back. Don't forget Linkedin.com – it makes connecting with specific companies and individuals a whole lot easier.
Go that extra 10% - often people do something to 90% and then stop, thinking that they've done enough. Go that extra step (follow up, getting in touch with an old boss, sending that email that scares you a little bit, etc) and you'll be on your way to what you want.
