Provide them with a functional resume that highlights your creative skills and experience. Place them in the context of how they have helped you contribute to the bottom line. Request a sit down meeting with your recruiter to go over the new resume and further explain what you're looking for in your next position.

It's usually folly to try to change anyone else's mindset. I encourage you to shift your own mindset, instead. As I see it, you're putting others -- like the employment agencies and the businesses in your town -- in the drivers seat, instead of yourself.

This is one case of "build it and they will come." Spending time to change perceptions of people who have a comfortable understanding of your skill set and strengths (that they can easily sell, by the way) is going to be a painful journey.

Make a list of 25 companies that you’d love to work for. It’s not as easy as it might sound. I know that this is a big challenge for some of my clients. It’s worth the time it will take you to actually sit down and put pen to paper.

In terms of locating firms which are hiring, I would recommend the traditional route of meeting with recruiting firms. Get in front of headhunters who may have leads to openings. Remain open minded regarding any job the agents may offer at the start even if it is a temporary role.

Think about your existing network (community groups, trade associations, past colleagues, etc) and ask them who they know in your new city – not who they know that is relevant to your search – just who they know in general.

I've spoken out in the past when I felt that my employer's internal policies were not acceptable. In my case it was a harassment issue and once I took a moral stand on the topic, the behavior stopped, my firm rolled out a handbook supporting EEOC guidelines, and others within my group thanked me for saying something. When you take a moral stand on a matter it often empowers others.
