If you’re interested in developing your leadership and management skills, you should check out David Burkus’s blog. I had the pleasure of hearing him speak at a staff development event recently on “How to Fail at Meetings.” His talk heavily influenced my own book-in-progress about slideware in the workplace.

In the 1960s, our fantasies took on a much more real quality when governments began conducting SETI studies and experiments to search for “Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence.”

Fantastic post from KyleConroy.com titled “What if I had bought Apple stock instead?”

Kyle put together a chart showing how much money  you would have earned if instead of buying that Apple product on release date, you had put the same amount of money into Apple stock.

I love to blog. Always have. But Gears and Shifts signifies the end of a nearly two-year hiatus from the blogosphere. Blogging today makes me nervous. Power corrupts, but PowerPoint corrupts absolutely. This is the message of PowerPoint prophet Edward Tufte of Yale University, who in the same Wired magazine article made the observation that PowerPoint’s “pushy” style rivals only the automated voicemail menu system for the Number One Thing That Sucks about the modern American marketplace.

In 1997, Vincenzo Natali directed in a terrifying horror movie called Cube. The movie explored  what would happen if a bunch of people with wildly divergent personalities were trapped together in  a giant maze of cubicle rooms. In 2005,  NBC released the sequel…”The Office” starring Steve Carell.

Facebook’s got game. To see what I’m talking about, read this article. Scary though it is, Facebook’s attempt to take over the internet will probably work.

I’m not the kind of person you would expect to see at Happy Hour after work. That’s because I’m lame. It’s okay, I own it. I like to be in bed by 10pm, I don’t like loud music, I’m allergic to nicotine, and I’m guaranteed to be schnockered after two or three drinks.

Recently I had a conversation with my boss as we carpooled back to the office from Atlanta. The gist of the conversation revolved around my attempts to assuage my guilt at feeling that maybe I wasn’t fulfilling all of my technical job duties.
