Every business wants their marketing, their advertising and their PR department to gain customers and increase sales. While they often work together, these processes aren’t appropriate for all businesses at all times. Oh, and they seldom work without SOME planning. What they seldom understand is the differences between the three and how to make them work.

…starting to think that perhaps the very best brands are not those that we love and talk about, but those we choose without even thinking about it.

They sneak into our lives and language subtly but assertively. Gillette and razors. iPod mp3 players. 3M Post-its and multi-coloured stationery of perfectly balanced stickiness.

Write a headline for your press release that sums up the content of the release in one to two sentences. Be sure to either do this on company letterhead or include the name of your company in the headline. It is also helpful if you include contact information for someone at your company at the top of the page.

A while back I was surfing my twitter feed and I came across a tweet from someone saying that since the the doctor had no presence online, she canceled her appointment.

Is the online world and social media turning into a lifestyle? I believe it already has.

Fraser Seitel, author of my favorite acadamia-intended PR textbook, answers the question that many others, especially those working in the media, are wondering: Why Do PR professionals have a hard time writing?

Metrics are sexy.

The key is knowing how to present them and make them experiential. How do you do this?

Here's a hint: Not with a pie chart.

Metrics have never been able to compete with advertising because of the mediums involved. How can you compare James Cameron's Avatar to the sales numbers of orange juice for the third quarter?

Attention all advertising agencies, marketing professionals, corporations, bloggers or human beings in general: Just stop faking it already! Why?

Viral marketing doesn't exist unless your content actually goes viral. This is contrary to what countless advertising, production or guerrilla marketing companies will tell you. (Sorry guys.)

When a piece of marketing does go viral? It will either burn out fast and furious or enjoy infamy and adulation from its many fans.

It can be difficult for companies to balance the necessary control and creativity in order to use social media effectively.

I read this short piece, “The Great Journalism Exodus,” by Jeffrey Goldberg in The Atlantic. In it, he discusses the fact that many journalists are switching over to public relations jobs.

What is the average weight of a male orca?

How many years did Charles I of England reign?

What is the definition of a wiki?

Wikipedia and the proliferation of wiki resources from both external and internal communities have served as open source organization for the internet.

Going viral is the dream of anyone trying to spread a message. It means people are listening and willing to participate in whatever meme is making the rounds. For those in the business of social change, there is enormous potential to raise awareness, money, and inspire people to take action with some of the most successful social change campaigns like #beatcancer going viral.

Thousands of organizations, corporates, and government agencies pour millions of dollars to teach people what to do, or what not to do. Don't stand on the gangway, buckle your seat-belt, throw away your water bottle before boarding (but you can buy the US$5 certified Evian on the flight).

If you read this blog on a somewhat regular basis, you know that I've been waiting a really, really, long time to watch Lemonade The Movie.

5 years ago, marketing through online branding was considered far fetched at best. The concept was raw, and the number of companies using it scarce. Today though, blogs, social networking profiles and online advertisements have become almost standard practice when it comes to marketing. The question now becomes “what brought about the change?”

The answer to this lies within the question: Change.
