“I wonder if my company would hire him…”

I was listening to a story being told about a keynote speaker at a conference. The speaker is huge in the innovation industry, has a number of books out, and is kind of up there on the awesome scale.

The woman telling me the story had no idea who he is.

At the first press office I worked at, I had a boss that pushed me to find the right answers and procedures – often telling me to go back and try again. I sincerely admired her patience.

I lost my job exactly 72 hours ago.

If you timed the distance between the ‘news,’ (by a very unemotional boss of exactly three and a half weeks) and my first phone call to a recruiter friend, it was almost four minutes.

Giving advice about asking for a raise is like giving advice about dating. Everything you suggest can be reasonable, however people will still have to deal with the emotional decisions of another person.

Let me stay on the safe side and teach you a way to raise your pay that I’m confident will work for everyone. Check out these 4 proven ways to increase your salary without begging your unpredictable boss:

So this is a post I've gone back and forth about...so I decided to go for it. I'm a woman...I'm emotional sometimes...I've cried at work. There I said it.

Then I ran into the bathroom, tried to fix my makeup and get my act together. But once I start, I feel like I can't stop the waterworks. Sigh. Sometimes I wish I was a man...they never seem to cry or if they get upset or hurt, you don't see it all over their face.

Technology HAS NOT helped us to work less
In 2007, Business Week had an article entitled Do Us A Favor, Take A Vacation!

My mom recently took a trip on Southwest Airlines, and she tore an article out of their in-flight magazine for me to read. It was called “The Pursuers,” and it had the subtitle: Why a second (or third) job could be the secret to career happiness.

Sometimes I use Skype’s instant messaging feature at work. I know what you’re thinking… Did she REALLY just admit that to the world?

Yes, I did.

How many of you tweet at work? Do you tweet for fun or are you trying to promote causes and establish professional relationships? Are you reading this blog on the clock?

Some people are stupid. You know this, right? I mean, all of us can think of a handful of dumb people in our lives. So, this post isn’t a lecture. It’s not a “don’t do this”, warning post. What we have here today is simply you, me, and countless others laughing at someone’s stupid use of social media.

I’m sure that I am not the first one to use this term. Or the first to feel this way. But it’s been nearly a year since the conferment of my Masters degree and ever since then, I’ve been feeling a little out of sorts.

I’ve decided to call this my “post graduate depression”

Here’s something we’re all pretty good at doing. Giving a prepared elevator speech. Answering a question we know we’re likely to get. I say “pretty good” because it is all relative.

Do you believe America needs enthusiastic, passionate, driven young adults? That corporate America patiently waits for brazen new graduates to enter the work force; young adults are welcomed into working class society with open arms; the “real world” is everything you dreamed about as a child? In four short years, I found myself believing that everything I wanted and needed from working adults and the workplace didn’t exist.

This quarter, as I approached the end of my time here at Northwestern, I found out about LIFT, a national movement to combat poverty and expand opportunity for all people here in the U.S. I immediately applied to become a volunteer, but I only wish I had found out about the organization earlier.

You’ve decided you’d like a new career direction, be it because you’re currently unemployed; finding your current role unfulfilling; failing to make any career progression; lacking motivation; or thinking about setting up your own business.

I was talking with a really close guy friend this morning about overcoming personal obstacles to achieve success. He calls it “risk investment” and more specifically that you invest in your future success by taking a “risk” now. As an example, he used me leaving my comfortable and stable job in San Francisco, selling everything I owned and moving to NY to seek out and pursue my true passions.

I’m going to let you in on a secret.

If you want to be happy in what you do, stop complaining. Do the opposite: do more things you don’t think you want to do. Try anything. Accept minimum wage – other people do it every day. What makes you so much better?
