This post is part of a blog series on Brazen being sponsored by Entrustet. They asked Brazen members to answer the question: What do you want your legacy to be? Here’s my response …
What do I want my legacy to be? This question really stumped me because it was something that never really crossed my mind. In all honesty, the short answer I would give is simply “I don’t know”. So I decided to relate this blog to what I do best: Social Media
We live in a extraordinary era where the social networks we partake in have made us completely transparant on the internet. Before I immersed myself into social media, I remember I was always worried about having all this information about me on the internet. But the deeper I got into social media, the more I realized that transparency was inevitable. I had an epiphany- I realized that transparant in social media was something I could not run away from, I then decided that this was something that I should embrace. I cleaned up my social media channels a bit and became active in every single Web 2.0 platform that was available. As time went on, I saw that social media would act as a tool that would benefit me greatly in the long run. Over time, I created a large following across all the major social networks and built my online brand. What I have currently built is one of the major avenues that allowed me to get my first job at Symbaloo right after graduation . As a recent student graduate and aspiring entrepreneur, the social media channels that I partake in became my own online portfolio when I searched for potential employers/clients.
So to answer the question of what I would want to leave behind as my legacy once I pass, it would be all my social media channels. Many of us don’t realize the versatility of these platforms, a lot of us may never will. Not only do I see social media as a tool to help me succeed in my career, I see it as documentation of my life in real-time. Its mind boggling to think that after 60+ years, when my grand children have grown-up, my whole life can be access right at their fingertips. They will see my my successes and the following I have built, but most importantly, they will see all my down points and struggles. As much as I hope that I will grow to be a man my grand kids can look up to, I also hope that they see that I was a man that made tons of mistakes and suffered a lot a long the way to attain my successes. I hope that they use these social media channels that I pass on as a blueprint to how to want to lead their life toward success in the future.
Benny - It's going to be really cool to share some of our social media with our kids/grandkids so that they can see what we were like when we were their age. Notice I say "some" not all. I certainly don't want them reading every facebook message, email or text I send, but I would love to show them my photos, blog posts etc. Good post.
