“People have romantic notions about television. In the highest realms they think it’s some sort of art medium, and it’s not. Others think it’s an entertainment medium, it’s not that either. It’s an advertising medium. It’s a method to deliver advertising like a cigarette is a method to deliver nicotine.” ~ Bill Maher

According to the A.C. Nielsen Co., the average American watches more than 4 hours of TV each day (or 28 hours/week, or 2 months of nonstop TV-watching per year). In a 65-year life, that person will have spent 9 years glued to the tube.

That’s startling.

The problem of course is that TV is seriously eroding the quality of life for the average American. I realize that is somewhat of a value judgment on my behalf, but the nations health and financial woes seem to support this thesis. I’m not troubled as much by the fact that people are spending so much time sitting on the couch, but rather by the numbness that culminates from seeing a plethora of advertisements.

Philosophers, Lifestyle Designers, minimalists, and frugality enthusiasts have long supported the notion that TV does nothing but fuel the rat race. The easiest way to create more free time in your life is to work less. The easiest way to work less is to need less. The amount you have to work is directly proportional to your perceived ‘needs’. This can be tricky to define since we all have different notions as to what constitutes a need. The easiest way to decrease your perceived needs is to limit your exposure to advertising. Decreasing the amount of television you watch or getting rid of it all together will likely change your life for the better. It certainly has for me.
