No, but it's on life support...
Dictionary.com defines chivalry as: the qualities idealized by knighthood, such as bravery, courtesy, honor and gallantry towards women.

How is this different from the business world?

OK, not all business deals with women, but have you ever thought how much more productive companies would be if they treated everyone with respect?

It starts at the top. Leaders set the example by how they treat peers, employees and customers.

People don't listen to what leaders say as much as they watch what they do.

In ways we are all leaders. It doesn't matter what rank, gender or race you're dealing with. Next time, try being "chivalrous" and watch your results improve...

When's the last time you've experienced chivalry in the workplace?

Chivalry, unfortunately, has deep roots in sexism. Specifically something called "Benevolent" sexism which is more dangerous than overt sexism.

I say good riddance.

If someone is behind me, I'm holding the door open for them. I don't care what sex they are. Men rarely hold the door for me unless they realize my hands are full. For every one of those damn women who yell at men, "I don't need you to open my door," there's another woman with her arms full who can't find someone to help her...all because the former have no manners.

Let's get back to respect people. Everyone is equal, so stop avoiding holding a door and hold it for once.

@ Emily, that's right!

I don't think chivalry is dead. At work, the men do open doors and let the women go out the doors first. And, I like it.

@ Emily, you are so right. I have seen women get mad because the guy is opening the door. I don't know why some women get offended when they are offered help. I am the opposite. I get offended if they don't open the door or let me go first. Maybe that is why it is dying because women are so into the mind frame that they can do it all and don't need help from a man.

Where are these men? I see this sometimes, but I think it just depends on the person's upbringing.

@ChaChanna...that's good to hear
@Quisha, yup. What is modeled, we follow.

06.01.10

@ChaChanna - because there are women who can do it, and don't need the 'help of a man'.

Chivalry is dead, as it should be. Chivalry is respect plus the idea that women need help to do anything. Respect is alive, as it should be. When you need someone to help and open the door for you, sometimes a person will, and sometimes they won't. That shouldn't affect whether or not you treat other people with respect. Insisting that a man must open the door for you is treating him with a lack of respect. Open the door for him--it's common courtesy! And tomorrow, when you need it, he will open the door for you.
