When you watch TV, it’s difficult to avoid the shows and ads about people who’ve “made it”; no more acne, lost 30 lbs, made X amount of money, etc. Biography, E!, History, A&E are all culprits in leading us to believe that we can also make it.

The problem isn’t that we can’t make it, it’s that we think there’s something to make it to. Some end that will make us happy.

The philosophy behind this syndrome is:

It’s not about what you do, it’s about what you get done.

Since what you get done gives no indication of what you did to get it done, it can be rebranded and marketed in hindsight to seem much easier, more glamorous, less risky than it really is. As if the outcome was in sight the whole time and a series of steps needed to be followed to get there. The goal became the end, the process a formula.

If what keeps us motivated is some far out end, it’s the end that serves the purpose of keeping us motivated. The goals we work towards are milestones of growth. Our individual evolution depends on them. The harsh truth is there is no finish line. Rather, it’s a cycle where change, not a result, is the unit of success progress.

William Gladstone subscribed to another philosophy. Continuously rewarding, forever challenging:

Be happy with what you have and are, be generous with both, and you won’t have to hunt for happiness.

The "it" is just as dynamic and changing as the journey getting there. Like you said, there's no finish line. It's very difficult to build our lives around small goals, but we try. On the other hand, big goals that we know really don't have finishes, are almost daunting. If you then take that perspective and know that "it" is just like those never-ending goals, I imagine we'll all be overwhelmed. I like the quote you add to the end, a way to center your mind. I also like to think about what I have the power to change. If I don't, I can't worry. You find that it's just how things work.
