You might be surprised on what shows up if you have yet to Google search your name. If you have a unique name, like Tanner Maluchnik, you can basically find anything about my online identity. My Google search results usually is dominated by the highly ranked social media sites such as Twitter and LinkedIn.

Most likely, your Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn profile will be among the top of your name’s search results. Why? Lots of different things go into Google search rankings and what not and Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn just happen to be some of th hottest sites on the internet.

I just recently saw a video somewhere on YouTube of a guy who set up Google Adwords (those search ads that appear at the top and to the side of your Google search page results) for executive names of I believe Google. So whenever these executives would search there name in Google to check out their personal brand, they would see an Google Adwords Ad to hire this guy. He actually got a job that way. Pretty neat.

Google Alerts

I also want to point out a cool tool by Google called Google Alerts. Basically, you set up a search term or phrase that you want to be alerted by (either e-mail or RSS) whenever that search term or phrase pops up on the internet.

So for example, I have a Google Alert set up for “Tanner Maluchnik.” So whenever someone mentions my name in the online space (that can be indexed and searched by search engines) I receive an alert notifying me of that. This allows me to go directly to the source to either thank the person for mentioning me for whatever reason or to resolve a problem (which has yet to happen).

I also have Google Alerts set up for various other search terms and phrases, such as “LifeDestiny.net,” which alerts me whenever someone mentions this blog.

Your name is definitely one of a kind. I'm pretty lucky to have a not-so-common (at least outside of Louisiana) last name like LaCaze. I always feel bad for the John Smiths of the world. I signed up for Google Alerts a while back and it helps with keeping track of my brand. Also, I probably do a Google search every couple of months just to see if much has changed.

Yeah never heard of that last name also. I agree it must be rough if you have a name like John Smith. Even some names that you might think not be so-common actually are in the global perspective.

I'm pretty sure I'm the only Kenji Crosland in the world. Makes it easy to keep track of things, that's for sure.
