It seems redundant that I would need to write a blog post about this. After all people have been talking about running a human business for years. But as more and more people from my office are getting involved in social media, it seems that they completely forget everything about being human and act like complete weirdos on Facebook and Twitter.
At the same time that all of these new people are joining social networks, I have become obsessed with the ABC show Modern Family. The cast of Modern Family gives some awesome advice on how to stop being a weirdo and be human.
1. Don’t bother people- In the last episode of Modern Family Phil yells out to Kobe Bryant while at the Lakers game. When Kobe responds to him, Phil has nothing to say. The moral? Don’t bother people. It’s fine to ask questions and engage your customers on social networks, but be genuinely interested. Don’t bother people JUST to bother them.
2. Don’t be overly formal- In this episode Phil and Claire are holding an Oscar’s charades party. The party is totally casual but Cameron and Mitchell show up in tuxedos. It’s hard to be trustworthy on a social network when you are being overly formal. Just talk how you would normally talk.
3. Don’t try too hard to be cool- Phil on Modern Family is always trying just a little bit too hard to be cool or hip. On a social network this comes across in a really terrible way. Don’t try too hard, just be yourself.
Just be yourself on social networks, even if you are speaking with a corporate voice. If you can’t be yourself, at least please stop being a weirdo.

In her book "I Like You", Amy Sedaris mentions that her mother always said, "Don't bother other people." I think that's great advice. Nice post!

I love this! Must say am very partial to modern family -- and to finding teachable moments in pop culture. Completely unrelated to professional advice (but overlapping in the good tv category...) I found these valuable lessons from Modern Family: http://www.babble.com/celebrity/celebrity-parenting/teaching-kids-with-m...
(and a few from lessons from Glee too...http://www.babble.com/celebrity/celebrity-parenting/teaching-kids-with-tv-show-glee/
