So, it is happening again! The world of open-source is taking on the established mighty giants. This time its Facebook that is the subject of an open-source attack. This time it is coming from four University students from NYC.
The idea is simple, create a platform that is open source so that users have complete control over their information and allow for everyone to know how to do it. This is the real crux of the arguments against Facebook, the fact that people are not directly encouraged or instructed on how to keep their information private and “safe from harm”.
According to Facebook, it is the decision and responsibility of the user to manage their information as the tools to do so are readily available. However, the innate contradiction within this argument is that there are a endless examples of how Facebook seemingly subverts the average user from truly knowing how to accomplish management of their information. This is where Diaspora may come into the picture.
So keep your eyes peeled and watch out for this new “development” or project to truly make some headway in the world of an open-source internet.
