Thank you to the record number of people who attended the latest Brazen Careerist webinar, "An Interview with Seth Godin and Penelope Trunk: Finding Career Stability." We apologize for the technical difficulties we encountered, and wanted to extend our appreciation for sticking with us until we were able to get started. Especially since it was such a great conversation!
We'll be posting a recording of the webinar soon, but in the meantime, Team Brazen wanted to immediately share some of the lessons from the event. Here our favorite tweets (found via the #Brazen hashtag) and takeways from Seth Godin:
On Being Indispensible:
People want to wear the mantle of being indispensable, but they're not willing to do the WORK to actually BE indispensable.
- @researchgoddess
There are a huge number of posers out there because for awhile you could get away with it.
- @DenaBotbyl
If you aren’t sold on Why, then whether it CAN be done or not is irrelevant.
- @remywriter
You’re a linchpin when you change your work for the better. Bring unpredictable humanity to your work.
You're a linchpin if people miss you when you're gone.
On Job Descriptions:
If your job can be described and written up in a manual, someone can do it cheaper.
- @LitaMitch
Learning to follow the rules & then getting rewarded is someone else's vision of being successful in your life.
- @WhenIGroUpCoach
The only good jobs left are the ones where no one can tell you what to do all day.
- @RJHealy
You can either whine about your day job or make things happen.
- @ichristina2010
Telling time isn't a valuable skill because everyone can do it. What makes you special?
On the Dip:
The Dip is your friend — it is the barrier to entry that prevents everyone from being awesome at everything. B/c of the Dip, you can generate value by being great at what you do. You get to pick how big a Dip you get to work with.
- @remywriter
“I am going to make my career a series of Dips that I can manage.” Managing the Dip = Lifestyle Choices
- @remywriter
Don't quit and wring your hands because it was too hard - you chose your dip.
The dip is the purpose of our lives.
On Work/Life Balance:
Best advice from the #Brazen webinar has to be to stand by your ethics in business and in life.
- @centsiblelife
#GodinLive making great points about Career Success & home /family success - You decide what your standard is for both
- @susanbeebe
There’s no correlation between your personal life and your career - you decide what your standard is for your life and your career life - you can live with it - it's a myth that the way you win is by tweeting at midnight.
On College Graduates:
Seth Godin's advice to college grads: Don't look for a job. Look for art, for a path, and keep your overhead low.
- @carleemallard
Don't look for a job, look for art, a path, a way to make a dent in the universe!
- @JBMBayard
All the people younger than you are going to be playing by the new rules.
On Setting Goals:
Be Human: Write down all the things you're interested in, circle one & do it until you get through The #Dip (challenges).
- @LacyKirkland
Great advice from Seth: pick your purpose and make it happen, don't wait for someone to tell you what to do. If you fail, try again.
- @thehrgoddess
If your ideas don't make you nervous, you're NOT working hard enough on your ideas / goals.
- @susanbeebe
Choose your goal, write down the date/time you'll achieve it, pick a friend to keep you accountable, see if you succeed.
-@nancyjmurphy
On Failure:
Stability can be a platform, not a box.
- @WhenIGroUpCoach
The lowest you can go is to start over.
There is a price to pay for being human and the price is that you have to confront your fear.
- @DenaBotbyl
A recording of the webinar will be available soon and an announcement will be sent out to the registrants. In the meantime, let us know…
What were your favorite lessons and takeaways from Seth and the webinar? Are you pumped? How will you become someone’s linchpin?
Thanks for posting the recap, Team Brazen! The webinar was awesome & yes, I am totally pumped. Both Penelope & Seth were phenomenal and I will definitely be tuning in next time.
Thank you for featuring my Tweets! I will be doing a lessons take-away over at www.evolutionyou.net in the near future, as well. Keep up the great work & have an awesome weekend.
Cheers!
Dena
Great recap, I'm amazed by how much content people were able to squeeze into their tweets!
I think one of the biggest 'aha' moments for me was learning how very sneaky that lizard brain can be. It doesn't always look like a crusty icky lizard - sometimes it poses as the extremely reasonable, well-dressed cautious voice. That having so many interests I can't choose could be the voice of the lizard brain. Pipe it down, lizard brain! Trying to live a great life here!
The other idea - if you're not at risk of failing, you're not on the path to Linchpin-hood ;)
