Yesterday we had our first in a series called Webinar Wednesday and the topic was: How to Choose Your Soap Box: Picking the Right Social Media Platforms. We had a great time going over some of the many platforms available to generate discussion and impact for a nonprofit.
There are three questions to ask when choosing a platform:
- Will this LEAD to a new relationship
- Will this help BEGIN a new relationship?
- Will this help MAINTAIN or ENHANCE an existing relationship?
Webworkerdaily.com had this great insight about Facebook Pages: (Shaping the Conversation)
Think of yourself as a party host, versus being the dictator of a small country. You can lead by example, suggest, cajole, provide resources and support, redirect, but you should not be heavy-handed in your approach on Facebook. At best, people will leave. At worst, they will make your Facebook Page unmanageable. In a way, the looser your grip on control, the more fluid, flowing and effective your interactions will be on your Facebook Page.
As an arts nonprofit – a platform such as Facebook to have discussion rather than to simply post updates is an imperative adventure. It is too easy to simply hop up on that soapbox and start shouting about how wonderful your projects are. The more effective strategy happens when you take that energy and creatively discover what your friends of the organization are doing in their own world as it relates to your projects.
When your nonprofit finds a way to shape and exchange the time on top of that soap box with your audience – you will have a genuine way to communicate your mission.
