Welcome to 2010, a time when no piece of information is out of reach so long as you have you cell phone. Once a device that was used strictly for phone conversation and an occasional game of “Snake”, we are now plugged into the world 24 hours a day. Can I imagine having a phone that is only capable of making calls? No.

For the most part phone calls only make up a small fraction of my cellular use, I average about 2,300 minutes a month (not including nights and weekends). Data is where I really put a dent, with my average mobile use between 4-6 GB per month (this is strictly mobile use and does not include any tethering I may do). I do not watch a lot of videos, nor am I streaming music, this use is limited to frequent visits to Engadget, Gizmodo, Reuters or any number of T-Mobile related sites.

I have also been known to fire up a game now and then, but I find that any amount of 3D gaming depletes my battery just as quickly as trying to run my refrigerator from a car battery. My laptop is becoming borderline obsolete, while typing a lengthy paper would be a daunting task on a mobile phone, I can always connect a Bluetooth keyboard and a video cable and type up anything with length that way.

Are there really that many people that still cling to their “dumb phones”? I realize the older crowd might still seek out the simpler devices, but to a person between 18 and 55 is there much of a market? My grandmother wouldn’t dare use a device she didn’t have email access on, what will I demand when I am someone’s grandparent? If technology owns us now, what will its effect be in 40 years?

I had a few days last year when a Windows Mobile phone I was using died, and I had to go back to my old "dumb phone" for a few days until I could get a warranty replacement. I was going out of my mind.

I've since switched to an iPhone 3G, and I don't want to imagine life without it. I can do so much while I'm on the go. I can look up information, check email, keep up with Twitter, read books... I honestly have no excuse for being bored.

I know a few people who claim not to "need" anything more than a basic phone. I'm happy for them.
