I don't like it when bloggers moderate their comments.  I know, I know, some do it to keep the bad spammers away.  But, when I get the message, "Your Comment Is Awaiting Moderation", I always feel that both my time and opinion aren't valid unless, the blogger in question, says they are.  And that just plain sucks.  As an active member of the blogosphere and a social media advocate, I want to know what everyone has to say.  Whether, it's good, bad, or ugly.  Without it, we limit the sharing model that both communities are based upon.  In addition, taking part in this practice, strips away potential discussions that can change perspective and diminishes your readers from wanting to participate.  Do you moderate your comments?  Why or why not?

I don't moderate but I do get tempted to edit comments for grammar and spelling...totally true.

I turned off moderation recently when I turned on a word verification. I kept moderation for a while because of an influx of spam I had been receiving. While comment moderation does stifle some conversation, at times it is a necessary evil. When I had moderation turned on, I never rejected legitimate comments--even ones I disagreed with. It was the spam I was most worried about.

I think its a personal preference. Some people fear that trolls will ruin their credibility while others embrace it. I don't think I'd ever delete a comment unless it was something completely offside and attacked someone personally rather than their ideas. Personal attacks are a big no-no.

I agree with Holly: it's a spam issue.

I think you're post is right, though-- and it's the responsibility of a blogger who is interested in open discussion to approve the good, the bad, and the ugly; if for no other reason but that it adds depth to the dialogue.

I use Disqus for that very reason. It allows the reader to comment but has a built in spam guard too. The comments that are genuine will auto-post, but spam is kicked to the curb. http://disqus.com/

After reading your responses, I see that as my little blog grows, comment moderation may be something that I'll have to implement one day in the future. Something, I had never really taking into consideration, until now.

Your openness and commitment to sharing your opinions makes the blogosphere go round. Thank you all.

I kept things wide open until some really vicious stuff started getting posted, at which point I switched over to moderating new commenters. Trolls tend to stay away once they realize no one's going to read what they have to say. Of course, this is only limited to personal attacks - it's weak sauce to shut out critques and people who challenge your idea.

Yeah, it's one of those things every blogger has to decide. I moderate comments because it makes me feel safer about whatever I'm going to say. I don't actually say stuff that's all that controversial, and I've never not approved a comment, because even people who disagree with me have been super respectful. But I think of my blog not so much as a completely open forum, but as a home where I welcome people in, reserving the right to kick them out if necessary. It might depend on what you want for your blog.

I've changed how I handle comments over the years. When my blog was new, I didn't moderate. Then I started getting spam with questionable links, so I moderated all comments. Now I just moderate comments for new commenters. Once I've approved the first comment, then all others should appear automatically. I think that's a good middle ground.

I get a lot of spam comments so I'm glad I moderate. I started comment moderation because some weirdo started using my blog to post white supremacy crap (very strange and very, very random). I assure you though, I publish all comments even when the poster doesn't agree with me.

Meanwhile, if some of you had good experiences, please share with us. It is very clear, home remedy approach is definitely better than doctor's office. It may not be true for all the other home remedies, but, for this high blood pressure thing, this should not be ignored and should be make public to let all to know.
