Joel Zimmerman is the platonic ideal of everything that Generation Y stands for. He is confident, but has fun. His personal brand extends through social networks and has helped him to develop a massive fan base. He works hard and is rewarded for his efforts. And until he was 27, he lived with his parents. Joel is what might happen if someone took the lessons from every features post ever on Brazen Careerist and applied them to his life.
You might not know Joel by his given name, but rather by his artistic persona: Grammy-nominated DJ and producer Deadmau5.
Putting aside the fact that tracks like “Faxing Berlin,” “Ghosts ‘N Stuff” and the Grammy-nominated “I Remember” are amazing productions in their own right, here are but a few lessons that Deadmau5 exemplifies:
Deadmau5 is the perfect example for everything that Gen-Y bloggers talk about. So why has no one talked about him? My guess: they’re too busy enjoying “The Reward is Cheese.”
In raising attention for his first albums he succesfully used the concept of sharing his music for free to by bypass the studios, sleeping industry gatekeepers.
But the brilliance of his forward thinking approach of social media and technology optimization lies in a less common alternate direction.
The online channels are not only used to connect with fans for distribution / PR purposes only. He also uses it to source ideas for new tracks and his private Mau5trap record label. He selects publicly, everyone can see and comment. By finding and endorsing new talent he outsmarts the established studios again. Pretty innovative. No. It's inspiring.
A clever dude from Niagara Falls.

Beth: I can't think of anything better to aspire to than doing what you love and making people happy while you do it. Well, that and making serious bank hand over fist.
John & Jennifer: From what I can tell, 27 was the age at which he got a separate place, but given that he was travelling before then for gigs, I assume that most of the last few years, he was using the house as more of a home base. Either way, it did afford him more opportunities to save money. I do agree that 27 might be pushing it a little.
JR: I wonder how being a touring artist is different from general location-independent work. That sounds like a good idea for a post, actually...
Dulk: I only knew bits and pieces about that strategy. Thanks for the summary!
Patrick: ABDC5 started? I really should start tuning in to MTV again.
