The Following is a Guest Post from my friend/fellow blogger Samantha Karol:

I’ve always loved to write. I majored in Print Journalism in college, wrote for the school paper, and each of my three internships was in the communications field. And yet, somehow, I currently work in the Marketing department of an online ad network. Although, I definitely enjoy my job, it’s not at all what I thought I would be doing post graduation. But, especially in these economic times, we have to be prepared for anything and willing to take any opportunity that comes our way.

When I graduated college in May 2008, the job market totally sucked. If anything, print news outlets were cutting back, not hiring, and there were way more people than there were available jobs in almost every field. I’d gotten a lot of great hands-on experience through internships, graduated with honors, had a notebook full of clips, and long list of references…but so did everyone else. I applied to somewhere between 80 and 100 jobs, some of them only remotely related to what I wanted to do. Several months, and about a half a dozen interviews later, I was still without a job offer and going crazy living at home. So, I applied for temp jobs and ended up working for Capital One until the end of the year. That’s when the job gods answered my prayers. I interviewed for a different position than the one I eventually got, but it was that interview that eventually led to my first real job.

It took me a long time to learn how to be a marketer. One of the basic principles in Journalism is to write objectively, and in marketing, it’s all about selling yourself or your company. This was a huge adjustment, and at first I felt a little uneasy, like I was unlearning everything I had focused on for the last four years. But, eventually I learned, and came to enjoy it, and in this unexpected position in this new field, I discovered a love for social media. It is this love that has connected me with so many amazing people, and offered me the opportunity to write guest posts like this one.

So, no matter how tired or stressed I am, I appreciate my job every day. Every time I go to the doctor and only have to pay the $20 co-pay, I am grateful for my health insurance. When I get a pay stub informing me that money has been deposited into my account, it’s a reminder of how fortunate I am to be employed.

I don’t know where my career path will take me from here. I’m sure it will take some more unexpected twists and turns, and I might be totally unprepared at times. But, as long as I enjoy what I’m doing, I’m going to find a way to appreciate the adventures I have along the way.
