I have worked for the same company since I graduated high school, when I first started it was a great job, it complimented my college schedule and as I would find out, would give me opportunities to advance. The job was in the transportation industry, something I had never considered a desirable career path, but I didn't see this as a career, I saw this as a stepping stone.
Well fast forward seven and a half years and after several promotions I am still there. While I started working for this company at the lowest rung of the corporate ladder, I climbed my way up the organization and find myself as an account manager. This in itself seemed like a good deal, I have gotten to work with companies like Reebok (turned Adidas) and other large name corporations, but I have found that I hate my job. I think for a long time I was blinded by the climb up the ladder and ignored things I am actually interested in, thinking that hobbies could never translate into careers. I am starting to see that I wrong in thinking that.
I am starting to reach out to people in my life that are in positions to help me boost my desirability, I had often told myself that the biggest thing I had going for me was that my resume would should how I had moved up through a company, what I didn't think about is "Who is Stephen Cullen". This is a question that companies want to know the answer to, and in the world we live in when we don't know something or someone, we Google. I took the logical step, I put my name into Google's search engine, I got to page five and still hadn't come across anything about myself, if I stopped at page five a prospective employer surely wouldn't invest much more effort. My journey begins.
I am learning the importance of personal branding and using my resources, both people and technologies, to begin getting my brand out there. If I want to get into a company, that company is going to have to know who I am, what I am about and if I would fit their business model. Just because you don't like what you do for work doesn't mean that you have to be stuck with it, take something you do enjoy doing and build on it, make it work for you and make it profitable. I look forward to where this new path will lead me I am eager to see what new faces and roles will be introduced into my life because of it.
