I know, I know. I’ve told you guys a gazillion times now that I’m working my ass off. Sorry to belabor (is that the right word here?) the point, but I have some advice for anyone who wants to listen… or read.
Even my change is important.
READ: These are simply some frustrations of mine and in no way aimed at anyone in particular. It’s more of a venting tool for me. Take it for what you will, take it for comedy, I’m not being condescending, but I am being serious.
Job 1: Art Gallery Retail Job
Job 2: Retail Clothing Store at the Mall
Job 3: Server (mainly), Food Runner (sometimes), and Hostess (sometimes) at local Pub Restaurant
Job 4: Sales and Marketing Coordinator at Local Radio Station
NOTE: I haven’t told you guys about this job yet. I am actually really excited about this job. It is a part-time, hourly job, but I am really excited about the opportunities that this job can and will bring me. (More info to come later).
Okay, I’m done ranting. Well, not ranting, just expressing my thoughts/frustrations/things I have learned.
I want to know, what takeaways do you have? Do you disagree with me on anything? Is there anything you have learned in the workforce that you want people to know?
Leave a comment below and let me know your thoughts.
I love you. Yeah, you. Reading this.
Wow. I could not agree more! I too have four jobs...and in some of the same areas as yours.
I worked in retail. I worked as a receptionist. And I have been a server for almost three years.
I laughed throughout your entire "rant." ;) It fits my life and experiences to a T.
People don't realize how hard servers (waitresses, bartenders, food expo, etc.) work until they've done the job. There are so many things to remember and the customers are all in their perfect world where they know that they specially asked for ranch and you forgot it?!? My God! How awful! Tip is instantly decreasing....
We don't make much in our hourly wages, and I have always wondered why? Why can't servers make minimum wage? We are doing WAY more than other people who make 20 times what we make.
Receptionists usually hate their jobs, too. So if you get a happy one, enjoy it and be nice back! They are the person that everyone else steps on and they do the bitch work that nobody else wants to do.
Retail...why do people haggle? Houses and cars are about your only purchases when haggling is acceptable. Buying a new perfume at Boston Store? Nope. Buying a CD at Best Buy? Try again! I'm not sure where people get this from, it's not 1864 anymore when nothing had an official price tag.
You really hit it square on the head. Nice work, Molly.
Wow, Molly! The last time I had four jobs I could barely concentrate well enough to READ blog posts, let alone write one. So what I want to know most is how long this took you to write and how you got inspired to format your post in this fetching way. And do you live on coffee and Ritalin? For the love of all that's holy, how do you focus and keep your energy up??
BTW, I've worked food service as well as retail, and I totally agree with you on all points.
:)
Lori
I definitely got a kick out of reading this post! I started a retail job for the holidays (and have been kept on), and I couldn't agree more about 1. haggling the price and 2. complaints about returns. As sales associates we have no control over the price of an item, nor do they tell us when an item is going to go on sale. Same goes for the returns deal - it is not possible for me to override the computer when you return something without a receipt, it only gives you one option: store credit. What's most frustrating is that people will tell you 'oh, I left the receipt at home.' If you knew you were going to return something, wouldn't you make every effort to get your money back in its original form? It's common sense people.
Thanks for sharing your frustrations! Hopefully, some consumers out there will read this and think about the absurdity of their requests next time they are out buying and returning items, eating out, and calling for customer service.
Hey Molly, I'd like the applaud your rant on being filled with poise. I actually think you articulated a lot of frustrations all of us felt as service, food, administrative, and retail professionals. It's funny you talk about haggling because the Today show had a bit on how it's ok to haggle in retail, etc. I was shocked! Now, I understand when something is ripped or damaged, it might pay off to inquire, but if nothing's wrong, where do you get off? (I of course realize I just wrote a review on a book about being a cheapskate, but the author has respect for people in these industries, hence the over-the-top nature.)
@Ashley - Thanks so much for your comment! I'm so glad that you share my same feelings. It's comforting to know there are other people who feel the same way. It makes me feel less, well, crazy.
@Lori and @Carlee - haha! I get that question a lot. I actually don't drink coffee nor do I take ritalin. I've never been able to drink coffee. Diet Coke is my fuel. And honestly, drive and focus really help me to keep going. I know that this situation is only temporary and that the harder I work, the more it will pay off in the end. You know? I love to write, so instead of sleeping, which I should be doing, I write. Writing helps me to get all that crap from the day off my mind and clear it before I go to bed. If I don't write before bed, I'll never sleep. Does that make sense? ;)
@Amanda - AMEN SISTER! "I left it at home is the lamest excuse ever." LAME-O!! If you knew you were going to return something, you should have remembered the receipt. Your bad, not mine. ;)
@Emily - The Today Show can suck it. ;) I saw that, too, and I was like SERIOUSLY?!! Thank you, Today Show for making my job that much more difficult.
The only thing I could think of when I read this was a blog post I wrote a year or two ago..I had to go through my archive to find it.
Here it is if you are interested http://shiploadofwilco.blogspot.com/2008/06/while-im-thinking-of-ita-ret...
